From the makers of the world renowned “Wizardry Empire” titles, Starfish SD brings you the latest entry in their popular series of dungeon crawlers. Elminage Gothic, previously only available in Japanese on PlayStation® Portable, now comes to PC offering a classic old school dungeon crawling experience with a dark, gothic twist!
In ancient times, the Great and Dark Gods clashed in a ferocious war over Man's control of the world, bringing despair and ruin to the lives of all humans.
As the conflict raged, the Great Gods sought to vanquish the power of the Dark Gods through the faith of humans. In return for their faith, the Gods promised humans a world of peace and prosperity and thereby a contract between humans and the Great Gods was formed.
By the contract, the Dark Gods could not interfere with the world of humans and were forever sealed inside their world of darkness. The people worshiped the Great Gods in thanks for their prosperity, and the world entered an era of peace.
However…
The humans grew complacent and allowed their faith to fade.
Now, in the far-off realm of Ishmag, King Jardin ushers in an age of peace. Unknown to him, the dark powers have already begun reaching out in secret, planting the seeds to bring about the revival of the Dark Gods into the hearts of men. Foul and hideous creatures are emerging from the deep, treacherous caves of Tsun-Kurn and rumours of a rising evil are creeping across the peaceful lands.
It is up to you to arm yourself and descend into the depths of Tsun-Kurn in an attempt to put an end to the ever growing darkness and save your kingdom.

Immersive, challenging, brutal at times, visually gorgeous, interesting, expansive, clever, complex, rich; all these words can be used to describe this obscure gem of a game. If you like dungeon-crawler RPGs that have an old-school aesthetic, aren't afraid to challenge you and refuse to hold your hand, *this* is the game for you. If you're into diving through maze-like dungeons, managing a party of characters that you yourself created, and delving into a dark fantasy world with a foreboding atmosphere, you will love this game. Just buy it now. Every fan of RPGs and dungeon-crawlers should play this game. I hope more games like this get made going forward.
Coming from the same line of development as the Wizardry games, Elminage Gothic takes the old school structures to the extreme.
Other Elminage games are decidedly more forgiving than this one. Weapons can now have negative accuracy and maps are one time use magical items with one single (repairable) permanent map much later on.
This is my first Dungeon Crawler and so far it felt DIFFICULT, and developed a patience and caution in me that few games demand anymore. The first dungeon is serious business and it took multiple trips back to town to eventually work out the best route, management of resources, and party formation to finally clear it.
It was an amazing experience once I was able to put all the pieces together. When a towering challenge becomes managably easy through your own knowledge alone that is a triumphant feeling.
The Side quests are so oldschool aswell.
-A Knight says he is giving medical treatment to adventurers early on, but he gives you nothing so you forget him, only for the bell to ring in your head an hour later when you beat an encounter and find a confused man you cant immediately do anything about.
- A child living in the cave gives you a book and nothing else but a corner of a room that bears the marks of habitance, but venture back with an empty party slot to that squalid little corner and lo and behold, you can take that child in and get them out of there!
No clear explanations telling you what to do or that you can do it, but little hints. It makes you feel all the more competent for putting things together.
You can't get that same experience from more convenience focused games that want everyone to have the same experience. This game is decidedly not convenient.
But when you feel victory isn't assured, it makes the experience all the more your own. Loved my time with this, would recommend it for the first dungeon alone. Have fun!
It's easily one of the best games of the DRPG/Dungeon crawler genre and most true to Wizardry's overall feel while also being an improvement on the games in many ways.
Unlike the JRPG/Anime branch that 99% of the genre became after Wizardry's and Elminage's it stayed more medieval (to put it one way)
You don't really only win by abusing weaknesses or by whipping out your ultimate, it's mostly good use of what you have present and what you can find. (as I say it should be as the genre was best when grindy)
I sort of like feeling like my whole group sucks for a good like 50 hours, and then they are not too bad for 50 more. ( then hopefuly they are kind of monsters for a good time longer too) Unlike most there's actually enough content and you haven't seen pretty much everyting early on but left with dungeons that you'll know what you'll find in
There's a lot to like and it a real loss for the genre and gaming world that there haven't been more to the series, that the genre sadly really took to the anime/jrpg route and that the other elminage's can't be played too well by us who can only play with english translations. (Would love to see other Elminages on here or atleast somewhere with english versions and even the Wizardry Empires and Wizardry Gaiden games too.)
Okay, I grew up on Lands of Lore, Wizardry, Swords and Serpents, Might and Magic, and Eye of the Beholder series (and many more). I still play games like Grimrock. I love dungeon crawlers and grid maps. This should be an easy fit for me. It's not. the interface is terrible. Clunky doesn't even begin to cover it. There's no intuitive nature to this interaction. The manual is, predictably, of little help, and the randomness of stats is bizarre. I want to love this game. I can't. It's got all the right ideas, and all the wrong designs. The interaction to figure out how to go between screens is obnoxious, and the sound effects are ear grating. It's like Might and Magic III, but worse. A lot worse.
Also, pet peeve: If you're going to translate spells, just go ahead and give them decent names. Funky non-sensicle names are pointless. I've always hated this about some of these games. If the spell casts fire breath, just call it that. It's not hard. Finally, why does the bishop only seem to start with Mage spells?
I wanted an old school dungeon crawler but there really aren't that many here on GOG.
Elminage is a simple to play but cryptic game with a ton of depth and lots of great artwork--it even comes with a cool digital artbook on GOG too! I just love this game's style.
Right now I'm trying to play as a solo summoner using spirit pact to see if I can play through the game with an entire monster party. This game presents many fun possibilities.
If there's anything I would gripe about it would probably be the RNG when it comes to character creation or the way your HP increases when you level up. The RNG gives you the absolute lowest numbers more often than not. It's very stacked against you so you'll be rerolling and reloading a ton just to get mediocre numbers. Other than that I'm having a blast with this game.
