It's solid but there are better choices

I never played this when I was younger. I only have a vague recollection of my friend showing it to me once on his computer but that's about it. On the surface it seems like something that would be right up my alley, i.e. a futuristic racing game with that signature late 90s cyberpunk style, techno music, and arcade feel where you race at extremely high speeds, take ridiculously high jumps, and blast your opponents with an assortment of power-ups. All set against the backdrop of cool-looking sci-fi locations. And the fact that it's running pretty flawlessly with gamepad support on modern systems is also a huge plus. And yet, I can't help but to think that I'd rather just be playing Rollcage instead. Because that's essentially what Dethkarz is - Rollcage but without its unique car physics. Plus Dethkarz really suffers from two major problems: 1) it has very little variety to the tracks and game modes, and 2) it's too damn hard. I only reached the second tournament after beating the first one without breaking a sweat, and the game suddenly got brutal with its difficulty, and even dropping it to easy didn't do jack to help. I don't mind a hard game but the difficulty curve in this one is just too steep and it's really off-putting. Again, I guess it's a solid racing game with a lot of nostalgic charm to it that I understand a lot of people are appreciative of, but my childhood was spent playing Rollcage and I'm happy for it because it is just a better game overall.

Nostolgic Classic...with some issues

I have this game on on CD-ROM, but I wanted a digital version since the disc is over 25 years old and might decay soon. The GOG version of Dethkarz is mostly working fine on modern systems, although there are some issues. Content-wise, there's not much other than rehashed cars and tracks, but that was the 1990s standard. Graphically, this game looks nice at high resolutions despite it being from the 90s. Sound is good. The gameplay is decent, but some may not like the how the controls feel on a keyboard, but it's remappable. It has limited controller support, but I didn't test it. For the GOG version, it randomly crashes sometimes, which is annoying because you can't save your progress until you complete a season in the championship mode. It's also missing the FPS benchmark that the disc version has. Overall, the game is alright despite its issues.

Nostalgic

First of all, some words of advice on how to get this game to run well: Go into the nGlide configuration tool and set renderer to DirectX instead of Vulkan. Inside the game, go to settings, graphics, customize, and set everything to maximum. Without doing the former, parts of a specific track won't render, and without the latter the game will crash a lot. Originally released in 1998, Dethkarz set the bar for futuristic racing games with weapons very high. It strikes a very peculiar balance between requiring good racing skills and rewarding smart use of weapons and power-ups. For instance, it can be advantageous to let an opponent pass by, just to get the chance to blast him away. While the driving physics are far from realistic, they allow for stunts and maneuvers that are simply plain fun. And even though there are only four cars in total, they all handle quite differently, and thanks to the tight controls, any mishaps are always one's own faults. There are just four base tracks in the game, each of which comes in three variations, for a grand total of twelve tracks. They all vary both in their looks and layout, with the difficulty steadily increasing with every new track and variation. Initially, only the short variants are unlocked, and one has to win a championship to unlock more. The requirements to do so are fairly steep, so in order to unlock everything, dialing the difficulty down may be necessary. At the same time, the rush of adrenaline when you're in the last race and duking it out on a highly challenging track is like no other. The only thing worthy of criticism is the lack of content. Once you've unlocked everything, which won't take more than a couple of hours, there isn't much left to do in the game. Still, getting there is a very fun experience, so for those infatuated with this kind of game, Dethkarz is an easy recommendation.

Budget WipeOut

Crashes every now and then, some loading screens don't display properly, and music tracks sometimes end before the race and it's just silence. Fun enough WipeOut style game, but far from perfect so only get it on sale if you have nothing better to spend your money on.

Worth Trying

Good but not a lot of content. There are basically 4 tracks with length/difficulty modifications. Still quite enjoyable for what it is. Cars handle well, combat is fun, tracks are pretty good (though #4 is really tough to beat the AI on). Notably while the AI cheats for a speed boost at the start they definitely do not rubber band at all.
