A milestone in arcade racing

This title is a deathmatch racing simulator set in a fictional future. Four corps of racers compete in a series of tournaments spanning 4 racing complexes (of increasing difficulty) each with 3 tracks (of increasing difficulty). Each corps drives their own type of vehicle, emphasizing either speed, handling and acceleration, combat ability or nothing in particular. The race tracks are suspended in the air, with many crazy tilts, jumps, bumps and tight turns. You fall down—you are teleported back up with half the speed. You're destroyed—it's all over. Apart from the main weapon (you may charge it up by holding the 'Fire' button) there's a number of powerups (missiles, shields, mines, booster, repair kit) placed along the track. You may carry one and deploy it at any time. Pros: — Brilliant graphic and sound FX. This looks great even now, but back in 1998 that was marvellous. Destroyed cars have their reactors go into meltdown, overload and detonate with a blinding flash of light; — Manoeuvring and landing killing blows feels great. The intricacies of racing tracks makes driving more interesting; — Different types of vehicles give a new dimension to the game: the "leave everyone behind" motto of the speeders does not easily come on terms with the "leave no one ahead" motto of the heavy-hitters. — Challenging; you must have the knowledge of the tracks and the feeling of your vehicle controls before you can actually expect any results. Cons: — The opponents have trivial AI. They fire and use power-ups lazily, haphazardly and ineffectively; never make mistakes, always follow the optimal trajectory, but have their top speeds capped. As such, either speeders or speed/acceleration balanced AI racers always win (depends on the track). Rating justification: — Extremely pleasant and memorable; — Challenging; — Cons do not have a severe impact on the overall impression. Not recommended to: those who dislike action games; casual gamers; Recommended to: everyone else.

Excellent

Not many games from the late 90s stand the test of time well, but Deathkarz is a racer that still rocks. It has a slick, stylized look with exuberant lighting and cool car designs. The tracks are memorable and although there aren't many, they stand out with their distinct tile sets, superb pacing and well tuned difficulty. My favorite are the Grand Keys Medium and the Red Planet Long, but I really like all of them. Speaking of difficulty, the game is very clever because there are lots of factors that determine it. Track size, car class, car team and championship all impact how tough a race is going to be, which makes the game very replayable. Sometimes you'll play a game and you can just tell that it was properly playtested, well, Deathkarz is one such game. The AI will cheat, for instance you start in the final position every race. The leaders in a race will also never destroy each other, and at takeoff they will accelerate way faster than you are able to. But those are well-considered compromises because as a player you have a lot of advantages too. You can selectively kill enemies, take dirty shortcuts the AI cannot, and use power ups way more intelligently than the AI. All this translates into a thoughtful, balanced game that eventually feels fair and focuses entirely on fast and fun gameplay. The excellent sense of speed contributes to this as well as the nice music. The cars all handle differently and the driving has enough depth that you can get better and eventually become a Deathkarz pro! This is not a game you'll necessarily play for ten hours every day, but it's a game you'll keep installed forever and come back to every so often. Play it with a game pad, steering wheel or keyboard; you can do whatever you want. It's not particularly fussy about hardware either. Just don't forget to reboot your system after installation or the game will hang for some reason.

Awesome game!

I played this game in the early 2000's and I LOVED it so much! The graphic was so ahead of its times and it is still good nowdays. Loved the futuristic environment, the cars, the places and the tracks. Super playable with a difficulty curve very well tweaked. I already own this game, otherwise I would buy it immediately! Kudos to GOG for revitalizing it, the game still deserves to be played.

Ein absoluter Klassiker...

Ein Klassiker von Rennspielen der etwas anderen Art. Auf 4 verschiedenen und durchaus anspruchsvollen Strecken ist nicht nur Höchstgeschwindigkeit, sondern auch etwas Geschick bzw. Taktik gefragt. Auf der Fahrbahn finden sich immer wieder Hilfen zum Aufsammeln, welche zur gegebener Zeit eingesetzt werden können. Wenn man die Strecken etwas im Griff hat ist der erste Platz noch nicht garantiert, denn die Gegner verzeihen Fehler genau soviel, wie Rambo seinen Kontrahenten. Die Grafik ist heute noch toll anzusehen und das Spiel läuft rasant und flüssig. Alle paar Jahre packt es mich und teste, ob mein CD Laufwerk noch funktioniert um das Spiel zu installieren. Daher meine absolute Empfehlung zum Kauf dieses Games.

First off, I am incredibly happy about this release :DD Thank you to all the prople who made this possible >^-^< I practically grew up with this game and it is to this day my favourite combat racer. It's fast, challenging and fun. Despite it's age it still looks nice and the soundtrack is also great. If you like games such as Wipeout you should definitely give it a try. I would recommend to install nGlide so you can render the game at higher resolutions and have a few extra graphic effects and Hamachi if you want to play online with friends. Sadly the game is capped to 30FPS when you play online. I created a Steam group called Dethkarz and you can feel free to add me on Steam/GOG >^-^
