Lovely World, but...

For me, the most important part of a Point-and-Click Adventure is its world, and Deponia is quite a lovely one. Even though it's a planet largely covered in junk, the bright colors and construction of its areas really paints a charming picture. That's what matters most to me, because even if it's filled with moon logic puzzles, you can always resort to a walkthrough, and continue on touring the world. And you probably will; in the beginning, puzzles can be a little unintuitive, but everything is structured in such a way that you have limited options, and each inventory item will eventually be consumed in a very satisfying way. The further you get, though, the less true this becomes, and some of the later puzzles are completely incomprehensible, unless you really like trial and error. The main character is also just awful, and to make things worse, he thinks that everything about him is great; I can't stand people like that, and this forces you to play as one! At the very least, the jokes do land about half the time, and when they do, they're a riot, or at least worth a snrk. Ultimately, I am glad to have experienced Deponia, but it's certainly not without its drawbacks.

Broken and poorly written

Deponia is a point and click game, you know how they go. They are slow, provide no adrenaline but instead the satisfaction or solving weird puzzles and if they are done well, they come with a memorable story and characters. Deponia gets almost everything wrong sadly. What Deponia has going for it is the worldbuilding. It's nothing original, the typical upper class denies entry to lower class trope, but the art is nice and it works out nicely when things really do look a lot prettier once you leave your little slum. But the rest is more misses than hits. On Deponia we're Rufus, a self centered ambitious guy that wants to leave Deponia and escape to upper class Elysium, a city floating up in the sky. Nobody seems to tolerate his attitude and for good reason, the humor just lacks skill. His ambition and drive take a backseat to plenty of poor lines about how deluded and conceited he is and we have to tolerate that for almost half of the game too. Luckily the charade is dropped when things get serious in the end, and the cliffhanger ending is kind of earned. The other characters you sympathize a bit more, they don't have any depth other than accepting their fate but at least they're not such a PITA. Our other important character is Goal, an Elysian girl that falls from the sky and spends sleeping for most of the game so she doesn't really stand out here making her the weak part of that ending. So the characters and story aren't great, then we have the puzzles. Like on most games of this genre a some are satisfying and some are headscratchers, things that don't really make sense and you stumble upon out of luck or cheating. However, there are game breaking ones, things that lock you out and require you to load a save from Daedalic's official website in order to continue. I got this at the pigeon puzzle, and needless to say lost faith in the game from that point on. The experience ends up becoming more frustrating than fun in the end, sadly.

Deponia I

Yes. Rufus IS very much alike Guybrush (I mean... just look at him!! Is like a brown haired twin), but this is still a good game and I enjoyed playing it, even though the plot has a few loose ends. Puzzles are not too complicated and there are not noticeable bugs (or at least, I didn't see them). Graphics and music are nice, but there are some sound effects that were a little annoying to me. In conclusion, I liked it and will be playing the sequels!

Average game with good style

Visually appealing with potentially good story... But empty. Twisted humor looks not as satire, but, rather like another mass media product it is supposed to parody. Sierra style puzzles make it more addiction, than actual fun.

Good story, very good puzzles

I hated every single character in this game. The protagonist, the antagonists, the secondary main characters, the side characters ... Yet, I loved the game! The story is simple but good and uncovered in a good way. The protagonist was made an unlikeable, self-centered jerk on purpose, and that worked out ... well, mission accomplished. While growing extremely tired of him, it really felt like I only helped him reach his goal because [nah, no story spoilers]. The graphics are very nice and fits the setting and story, and the voice acting is good. The controls worked well though Rufus could have moved a little faster. The main reason for my five stars is the puzzles. They are a mix of out-there puzzles (I am a Monkey Island fan) and interesting logical puzzles. This might be subjective but the developers really found that sweet spot of challenging difficulty but no let-me-check-if-this-game-is-on-UHS moments. Solving them gave that feeling of accomplishment and reward that is just what I look for in an adventure game (though I at times was unsure if I really wanted Rufus to succeed). The game gives you a lot of hints but they are never too evident. It is always clear what you're short-term goals are. So, if you like a whacky, cartoonish story (albeit with very unlikeable characters) as indicated by the screenshots, this game might be for you. If you like really well designed out there puzzles and good logic puzzles, this game is for you. If you are more of the "use hammer on nail" style puzzler, you probably won't like it.
