Stylized and sadistic

Fantastic narration, artistic style, and immersion in this gothic horror roguelike/hero management masterpiece. It is, as others have pointed out, quite punishing (every action is permanent) -- but also very rewarding when you start to get a feel for it and start skirting around the edges of disaster instead of blundering headfirst into it. Resources are scarce and there are meaningful decisions to make every game turn even before you decide who to send into the dark. The UI is quite pleasant, which quite a few nice little touches like "unequip all trinkets". Stability-wise, I've experienced exactly one crash in about twenty hours of gameplay. Just picked up where I left off, no progress lost. Five out of five, fantastic game at a great price (I got it on the intro sale).

Buy only if you're masochist

I was looking to buy this game and as soon I saw it on sale I bought it. Played it a lot, it's fun at start but after you get to level 5 and up it's totally unbalanced. I tried time after time with different setups, guides online, etc. but what was frustrating is that in the end it just battles are defined by simple luck and your strategy does little to minimize that. I love hard games but when hard its just defined by trying time after time after time isnt fun anymore.

Fun times, I recommend this game

It's unique, and pretty easy to learn, yet with enough depth to compel you to keep going. Addictive, and fun, it's a nice way to take a break from other games. After going through it several months ago, I'm about to give it another play through!

I have to agree with Andre_geo

But I must fall into category three, I still enjoy a nearly impossible game. Some good character building/character combinations and the threat of permadeath forces you to play a game of "push your luck" from time to time. I enjoy the game. I picked it up on sale and have received my money's worth. I have received some frustration as well.

Decent game. Terrible linux port

TLDR: https://www.gog.com/forum/darkest_dungeon/warning_nonsteam_andor_linux_users_second_class_customers_for_devs/page1 Game itself is pretty solid and may give you lots and lots of hours of playtime, if you like challenging experience, mixed with bunch of rng. And it gets even better with mods, which can enhance game in every aspect - add new classes, rework existing mechanics, etc, based on your own tastes. BUT. If you are linux user - you wont be able to experience this properly. Normally, game has a 'mods' subfolder, where you drop everything you've downloaded from nexus and other places - and then, once you launch game, you can freely (add new ones and remove existing with just few clicks) use mods from this location on per-save basis. BUT it doesnt work as intended on linux - thus you can only make mods to work by replacing game's own files. Needless to say its frustrating and remove all this flexibility of control, you should have. I've reported this bug multiple times - on steam, via email - and never got a single answer from developer (nor bugfix, obviously). So yeah - if you are linux user, dont buy this game. Not on gog, not on steam, nor anywhere else. Native port is lazy and devs have no plans to fix it - apparently they have more interesting things to do. Thus its better to spend your hard-earned money on something else
