In 2455 A.D. , Kage Hishima used the magical powers of the Daikatana, the most powerful sword ever forged, to alter time and establish himself as supreme ruler. You are Hiro Miyamoto, one of the few people on Earth who remembers what really happened. The burden of saving the world, your version of it, has fallen unto your shoulders. You’re not alone as your friends, Superfly Johnson and Mikiko Ebihara, travel by your side. You must gather weapons, overcome all obstacles, discover deviously concealed secrets, and battle a bewildering array of foes. Use your resources wisely as you’ll need all the help you can get. Are You Ready?!
From the rock star designer, John Romero, comes the legendary, in more ways than one, Daikatana (“long sword” in Japanese). Run ‘n’ gun is the norm here as you blast your enemies to oblivion with over 24 glorious, bad ass weapons. On top of the sweet, sweet guns, you are armed with the Daikatana--a weapon that grows in power the more you use it. Go on a wild time-tripping ride and make your enemies “Suck It Down!”
Wreak temporal havoc in 4 distinct time periods: ancient Greece, medieval Norway, near-future San Francisco, and high-tech Japan in 2455.
Incredible sidekicks as they provide cover fire, watch your back, and provide helpful feedback to assist you in your mission.
Pulse-pounding multiplayer action with two equally exciting modes of play: classic Deathmatch and Jewel Quest, a variant of capture the flag.
Throwback Thursday Recommendation
We share the earnest reasons that make a classic game so dear to us!
Recommended by Kilg0re, Stream Team: Daikatana is an underrated game in my opinion, that has an undeserved reputation for being a "bad" game. Though it certainly has it's janky issues, and there were many issues on release, there is a lot of fun to be had here. IMO, once you get past the drab, grindy opening episode (which is the one most people played in the shareware demo), the game really opens up in terms of graphics and level design. The John Romero approved community patch makes it much more playable on modern PCs, and I think even if it's not a bona fide masterpiece, when all is said and done, it's an ambitious fun experience.

Yeap, here it is...daikatana.
Well, I've played the game just recentely. It was a great fun. Certain things stood among the rest in a bad way; for example the weapons. An FPS should always have great weapons but unfortunately daikana puts at your disposal a huge arsenal of simply useless weapons. In each stage you will end using the same weapon, and that's a major problem for an fps. That said the infamous sidekick AI is truly lacking, but after the patch is functional and shouldn't be too much of a trouble. On the other hand the level design is great, albeit a little bit incosistent, as it's been pointed out, and the game represents quite a challenge for new players and veterans as well. I've never played the multiplayer but I've heard it's fun. If you are an FPS fan, possibly with a passion for the '90s and the moody esthetic of that period, I would reccomend Daikatana: it's fast, fun, dark and b-movish.
This is the game that taught me a valuable lesson; don't buy into the hype. Nastalgia can make some questionable games worth playing again years later. This game was DOA almost 20 years ago. To those who buy it, enjoy your painfully long unskippable cutsceens.
Oh where to begin? The level design is nonsensical, inconsistent, and often confusing. Weapons are either game breaking or absolutely useless with no room in between. The graphics weren't even stellar in the preview phase and now they are just a blocky mess. There really isn't much in the way of positive things to say about this title. I am giving it a second star due to what I feel are clever mechanics for character advancement.
It is a game ahead of its time, where Romero tried to innovate and was baddly recieved because of a public opinion demonized him and his work.
The game has fixing patches that will make it a great fps.
Stop whinning and try it before getting infected by haters speech.
The creator of this game made Doom and Quake and those by definition are the foundations of modern fps.
So, Romero doesn't screw around when making games.
Buy it, patch it, apreciate it for the time when it was made with the respective associated story of its maker and then maybe your opinion may become valid.
Of course it has its limitations, but didn't all the games back the had?
There are people calling this the worst game ever...well i can surelly name some recent far far worst games, can you do that exercise too?
Do you know why there is such a remake, remaster and new 90s inspired shooters fever wave in 2019? Food for thought.
Not perfect, but there was a time when someone had to take chances, and Romero did.
I give it 3/5 just because the fixing source of the game are the fans and not the producer.
I never played Daikatana when it originally came out and later i only heard about this creation of John Romero was it legend as one of the worst shooters ever made. But i was curious. If it is really so bad? If legend is true? Answer is: yes.
I knew this in moment of starting new game, when i landed in one of ugliest swamp i have ever seen in video games, full of buzzing bugs and jumping frogs as first enemies. Daikatana is ugly even as a 2000 title. It using Quake 2 engine, but i looks worse than Quake. Gameplay is clunky and levels and enemies are often iritating. Involving time travels plot had potenial but in the end is boring, and voice acting and cutscenes are hillarious bad. One of the key features of Daikatana: companion system, is the worst part of game. Buddies of main hero are totally idiots who go straight into danger, shots you in back, blocking everywhere and when they die is game over. I had to save/reload very often. Lucky for me there was an option to disable limited save crystals feature so i was iritated less times.
But i can't say that Daikatana is the worst shooter. There was some moments when i had fun. Four periods of time is four various enviroments, enemies and weapon sets. And some of weapons was really satisfying to use. And some leves was satisfying to complete. There are worse shooters out there, but they didn't have do impact to games as media. And thats why i gave Daikatana two stars instead one.
I don't recommend Daikatana as pleasent game. It legend is really true. But sometimes you have to see on your own eyes what it means when big game is bad game.
