Don't trust it

My biggest problem with the game is that compared to the protagoinists (V and Johnny), the corporations and many of the gangs look like saints. To me, the most likable faction in the game are the war vets suffering from PTSD (6th Street) that have basically been isolated in a warren on the cheap side of town. Your only choice in game is to gun them down and ridicule their issues. One of the protagonists (Johnny) is literally a terrorist that set off a nuclear weapon in a city filled with innocent bystanders. He never does get a redemption arc. By the end of the game V, like Johnny, has killed more people than smallpox. He never gets a redemption arc either. He never takes ownership of that mess - he basically claims that his going on a killing spree was the fault of the corporations, the gangs, life, anything at all to not take responsibility for his own actions. Ultimately, the game ends on a whimper, not a bang. The protagonist (V) never gets enough self-realization to conclude that he is the real monster of the story. He doesn't get redemption or move beyond narcisism and the "woe is me, I'm dying act" to justify his (largely senseless) killing spree . The corporations retain just enough grime that you aren't really comfortable letting them win even though a rational person would probably agree that's the best scenario for the citizens of Night City. The is no cathartic moment of truth like "I am Legend" where the whole narrative changes, no "Godfather" moment of a good man sucked into evil, and no character growth. My guess is that the game wanted to be a commentary on the excesses of the rich, the struggles of the poor, and the downside of jingoistic patriotism. It utterly failed utterly in that regard.

So I'm hoping this review will be cathartic. Bought this on 13 Dec, having followed development since 2014. I WANTED TO LOVE IT! It was the game release i was most excited by and knew about the glitches before buying, but still. couldn't. resist. Even 50 hours in, was still largely supportive of the immersive environment and spellbinding experience. Now, having 100%'ed it 5 days ago, and finally completing the Gig mission fixed in today's 1.21 update, i'm out for good. I've disabled auto-update, don't care for DLC, free or not, and consider that i've gotten my money's worth, although CDPR have exacted more than their pound of flesh in return. The more I played, the more the bugs accumulated, preventing completion of various missions, some of which were main story lines, and forced my hand to return to old saves and try a different branch or just to avoid missions / areas completely. As weeks became months, my enthusiasm waned and I just wanted it to end. In total approx. 30% of my total game time was lost to bugs. Now I'm done! As Johnny might say: "it's been one hellufa ride." and one i don't hope to repeat with any other title. To genre diehards who are considering purchase, I'd say leave it for 6 mths to see whether CDPR can redeem what is otherwise *beautiful lesson in frustration.* To everyone else, wait until 2077.

Overall the game is actually fun even in its current state. If it came out bug free everyone would consider it to be a 10/10 game for sure. However as it stands it is underdeveloped. Every single aspect of the game is either buggy or unfinished. There is no one thing in it that couldn't be improved. Missions are buggy and the pacing is a mess. 90% of the side quests are copy pasted and there are too many of them. The performance is all over the place, some parts of the city will just lag no matter what, while others work completely fine and look gorgeous. I urge anyone interested not to forget about this game or give up on it. If the devs actually fix the bugs, this will easily be a recommended game. Not in its current state, but in 2-3 years hopefully.
