Cold Waters

I love this game. It was what jumpstarted my obsession with submarines, and is what continues to nourish that obsession. What strikes me the most is the attention to detail. There are the technical aspects, which are very well done: excellent sonar model, very accurate submarine specs, real tactics. The store page description is definitely accurate. And then there are the gameplay details. Just recently, I stopped an invasion of Taiwan. I didn't sink all the ships, maybe about half of them. I then escaped since I was out of TASM missiles. I still won, because I crippled the invasion force. That is superb game design. Also, the game files are easy to edit. I like the Alfa sub (it completely changes your tactics so beware) and I wanted to make it suitable for the campaign. I added it to the roster for the first campaign and gave it minor upgrades so it would be almost up to par with American subs, while still having its unique quirks. This is a fantastic game.

Once upon a time there was a Microprose subsim called Red Storm Rising on Commadore 64 and Amiga that was based on a Tom Clancy's book. That little subsim was exellent then and after all these years it's still fun to play. This game seems to be heavily influenced by that golden oldie and can be called modernized version of that classic. It's not a hardcore sim like Dangerous Waters, but you still have to use the same real life tactics. My only gripe is that it's currrently little overpriced for what it is. Something like 20 euros would be better. P.S Works great on Linux using wine version 3.6. You only need to install correct fonts.

Cold Waters puts you on the side of the handle for the first time in my subsim career, autogided missiles, auto tracking, fucking laser sights enter the battlefield and when i ever deel cornered i just remember that i am a literal force of nature and start blasting, the enemies start running and i just sank 114.000 tons in a single fight without even getting seen. Very fun if you are new to subsim since it's arcadish compared to others, ultra fun if you played silent hunter 3 and you gotta get a math degree to get a near hit (love them both)

I would have to say, this is an amazing simulator of a submarine during the cold war. The simulation is slightly more simplified compared to games such as Silent Hunter 3, but that is not neccacerily a bad thing. So far, while only 5 hours in, i can't stop thinking of The Red October while playing the game, if you liked playing silent hunter you will most likely love this game too!

If you look for something complex, dont buy this. I did not play it for long yet, but so far it seems to be pretty simplied compared to Dangerous waters. If one likes to fiddle around with sensors and get a look and feel of really being on a submarine, then there are better alternatives.
