Astrox Imperium is my attempt to create the space game that I wanted to play, but no one had created. I wanted a single player, open-world space game that is similar to games I enjoyed, like Homeworld and EVE, with economies, factions, and a story. A game where I could set all the parameters, and the universe would come alive with new challenges each time I played. I tried to take the best of what I liked from many of my favorite space games, and combine them into something simple but deep, familiar yet fresh, and enjoyably addicting to play.

The human struggle to survive is an all too familiar one. As the planet collapsed into an ecological depression, mankind as a whole is forced to expand his vision to the skies. A grand ship was built, and the ‘Imperium’ was scheduled to launch mankind into the future. With a new Quantum technology at its core, the Imperium was mankind’s greatest achievement. Putting aside all differences, the people of world came together. Under a common goal, the efforts of an entire generation came to fruition. The Imperium was ready to carry the dreams of us all, and with it, the hopes of finding a second chance.

Not any one person knows the whole truth, but from what can be gathered, here is what we know. The Imperium was destroyed, and many of the human pioneers perished during the event. The survivors congregated together and began to build a temporary home from the wreckage of the ship itself. At first they waited for rescue, but it wasn’t long before the first ones accepted their fate.

It has been 230 years now, and mankind has been quite busy out there in the stars. The story of the Imperium, passed down through the generations, have all but faded away completely.

The main game play loops are fairly simple, and familiar. What makes Astrox Imperium unique, is the way that you can easily glide between the various loops to maintain a nice level of progression, without it feeling any more ‘grindy’ than you want it to. Sure, you can just mine rocks if you want, but Astrox Imperium provides you many different ways to progress your pilot.

As with most space games of this genre, mining is a big mechanic of Astrox. It is the easiest way to earn credits, and most players are familiar with how it works. You can also complete contract missions. These are randomly generated missions that offer a variety of task and objectives to complete. Some of these contracts are combat missions that will involve raiders, pirates, and sometimes regular npcs. The combat missions offer a bit more action to an otherwise relaxed game. The rate at which you choose to progress is up to you. You are given a number of game options allowing you to adjust 'the grind' and speed of the game. There are a number of small, interesting little mechanics sprinkled throughout the game that were given a lot of thought and care, but you will not find anything groundbreaking or innovative here. This game is meant to feel comfortable and familiar. The game play loops are designed to be simple enough to understand quickly, and complex enough to enjoy over many hours of play.

Many of the classic mechanics from the space game genre have been incorporated into Astrox Imperium. Basic interface controls were designed using elements from some RTS and FPS games. All the fan favorites and core game play elements have been included; mining, crafting, trading, refining, fleets, combat, exploration, survival, and more. This game will seem familiar to fans of the space survival / exploration game genre. Here is a list of features that are currently in the game. Amazing

I rarely leave reviews but all I can honestly say is two things. It's very well developed and you can absolutely tell that the developer really cares immensely about this game. It is most certainly EVE Offline as people call it and that's the draw for me. I tried EVE and it was a little much for me but this game is more approachable as it's single player and you can just take your time and learn without anyone bothering you much. It's very in depth in it's current state and I can say honestly, it's one of the best space games I've played. Did i mention the developer cares? That's icing on the cake. A lot of these early access titles go so far and wind up being abandoned. This game I can pretty much guarantee that that will not happen. You can tell that it's well developed and the creator really truly loves his own game and wants to make this one hell of an experience for everyone who plays and so far he's totally killing it and meeting his goal. I love this game and I recommend anyone who reads this review to just buy it. Don't feud with yourself, don't wait, don't make excuses... This really is one you shouldn't pass up and this developer deserves our support. I cannot stress enough how obvious it is that he cares, immensely. Thanks for the wonderful game Jace, please don't quit. This is amazing and better than most titles the AAA companies put out.

Open-world space sandbox, for everyone!

We all kinda knew deep inside that that the "open-galaxy" space sandbox genre would be better OFFLINE. I'm talking about games like EVE Online or the sandbox side of Elite: Dangerous. They're notoriously highly dependent on connected services, one galaxy with everyone getting to ride in it, spend time, unlock ships, lose ships, lose hair... WIth Astrox Imperium we get to verify that hypothesis, the results? - We can pause (active pause) - We can fast forward time (3x) - We can customize the gameplay (starting specs, multipliers, timers, scales, death consequences) - We don't lose as much real-life time grinding and re-grinding - No fear of missing out when we exited the game and go about our life - No maximum lifespan for the game - Mod support. Now the game itself: it's not an arcade space simulator like Elite: Dangerous, No Man's Sky or Star Citizen, where you use analog sticks for all ship movement. In Astrox you use mouse and keyboard and information panels to plot navigation and your ship's navigation computer does the rest. Which frees you to manage modules, targeting, scanning, launching drones, etc. That's the way it should be and will probably be in real spaceships that are too valuable to have a human steer them. There are manual arrow controls for avoiding obstacles for example. Astrox knows its crowd of virtual spacefarers in randomly or procedurally generated galaxies, and offers simplified and faster progressing systems which greatly benefits enjoyment. If you like a stronger challenge or grind, I am sure you can customize the gameplay after experiencing the default difficulty for a while. But the complexity might not increase that much. Another thing I really like is that a lot of features are available in the first hours of the game, all the jobs, bigger ships, top tier ammo, hiring NPC pilots... And the cost of entry isn't ridiculous. That means that if you're good at making money, you'll get rewarded very fast. As a space enthusiast with a day job, this game makes my favorite game genre acccessible to me again. The game is still is a grind, a time sink, and a "second job", but one that lets me tweak it according to how much time I can spare, that way I feel it respects my time. If I schedule a play session of 2h because 2h is all I have: I can still experience a lot of varied gameplay within that time. It's also less dramatic to start a fresh new game for any reason: you can give your new pilot a custom number of starting skill points, credits, inventory items, to pretty much come back to where your previous character was, only with a different map and faction states. The game doesn't have much of a story, I think the developers planned for it but haven't been able to showcase a proof of concept campaign - so the sandbox gamemodes are the way to go for me, past the tutorial. At some point the "engagement" to the galaxy will dry out without an evolving narrative overarching the entire game, but a great number of sandbox players completely ignore story elements. So it might not matter to you, just know that if you play other similar games that get story updates and are mainly into those stories, Astrox Imperium might feel barebone to you. The UI and controls are easy to get used to. It can be daunting during the first hours when all you have to do is navigating to a station or mining a rock, with lots of panels and buttons involved, but as the gameplay elements increase: the UI stays the same and in the end it is quite simple but powerful. There may be room for more QoL improvements, but I never get the feeling the game is fighting me. If I'm confused, I can always pause and look for answers. I wish for Astrox Imperium and future iterations to gain more traction, a larger community, and perhaps grow its own DNA further. One thing that niche and indie games lack unavoidably is player-driven online resources. May it be answers to how-to questions, discussions, video guides, out-of-game tools... I fully recommend this game, it plays like a sandbox, so once you have your favorite missions and your goals, it gets fun really fast. Like, "less than an hour"-fast as opposed to many other games.

A pleasant disappointment:)

I have bought it, tried out for a few mins... and decided to leave it for later thinking it is just average space based game. Once I got back to it and decided to spend more time exploring game interface and mechanics I have discovered really interesting game. You can do whatever You like to earn money here whenever it is mining, salvaging junk, refining ores, fabricating "stuff" for personal use or for sale, doing missions, hunt pirates, became assassin or a pirate- it really is up to Your liking. The way it is implemented is too really nice- there is no need to have inhuman reflexes or 3d orientation to handle ship. Your pilot has various skills which affect different areas of the game- some will let ship fly faster, haul more cargo at once, be more resistant to damage, or became more efficient at mining or fabricating items... or be better at hiring mercenary help. Graphics is also nice and at the same time it is not overflowing with various effects which might make things like combat harder to read. Version 0.0093 does not have faction plot implemented but game itself is VERY playable especially if You toy around with sandbox mode. I've spend in game around 80h and only once I was forced to use "Import pilot" feature as a work around a bug- which proves it is already very stable. I'm looking forward for full game version now:)

A realistic space sim that's fun to play

I have been watching this game for a while and part of what won me over is the detailed and regular communication the Dev has with his customers and potential customers. Just today, I played for about 3 hours straight and never noticed the time. The game manages to address the difficulty of space battles (the pain of dying) by providing choices of what happens after you die, restart, load save, etc. Want to be iron man, that's up to you, want to go back to save (that's me) do that. The mining is so relaxing, the sound and movement of the beams, the refining, it's all so good, and as much fun as I'm having now, the game isn't fully designated as "done", so that means more fun can be added. I have all the top name space games like this one, NMS (a decent game, a bit too fluffy and stingy on space battle missions), and others, but THIS one is holding my attention. There's so many options to choose from in what you want to be, miner, trader, pirate, law, etc, so many ships to save up to buy, same thing with the weapons and modules. Just traveling from point A to point D becomes a challenge in and of itself if you run into pirates. Do yourself a favor, if you want a space game you can loose yourself in, this is it.
