Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura

Great writing, a system where you can play many different typs of characters even though there is quite a bit of imbalance, amazingly nonlinear. An interesting setting of what it would be like the typical fantasy setting to have an industrial revolution which makes it even more fun. What's the problem? The game is almost too big. Walking around Tarant (the largest city in the game) when new to the game trying to explore is very daunting and yet the graphics get repetition doing it and it is easy to get lost even with the map. I much prefer 2D isometric games on the scale of Planescape: Torment and Fallout 2. Arcanum also has some game balancing issues but with the vastness of choices this is to be expected.

Interesting Story line and always leaves you curious. Always something to play through for again. Plenty of side quests and an acceptable ending. Does work on Ubuntu+Wine

Allot of people never heard of arcanum, not even the die hard fans of the geanre. Those that have played it says it´s like fallout... I´d say fallout has allot to learn =). Sorry for the bad english.

one of my all time favorite games. steampunk glory, comrades, buy it. dont think about it, just do it.

One of the few games to mix Magic and Technology so flawlessly. A true epic of what an rpg story should be. The choices you make really matter and they effects events even into later game. It has the most choices and character choices I've seen in most any game. Background, classes, races, and alignment. Play style for every type character whether you love pure combat or diplomacy style. Mix up your style however you like. But beware this game doesn't pull any punches. You pick a fight with a high level body guard. You'd better be quick of wit or your dead. Not sure if there ever were any patches. But I have had the game bug on me one time 20 hours in where a quest for main story wouldn't recognize an item I had for it. So beware to save every hour or so just in case. Like all games of the older age there are a few exploits to find. Like alignment helms. But if you need to know any thing about this game it is this: IF YOU EVER GET STUCK AND NOT SURE WHAT TO DO OR WHERE TO GO. READ THE NEWS PAPERS. THEY HAVE HIDDEN INFORMATION THAT WILL HELP YOU GET BACK ON TRACK.
