The series gets worse and worse...

God, I have seldom played such a painful and boring "horror" game... nothing has any consequence. The overpowerful enemies get you? You just start at a random location in the current part of the level. But before you do, you'll have to endure a long sequence with flashing images (did no one tell the braindead developers, that most people play such games in dark rooms, where flashing images are absolutley hell?). This "sequence" gets tedious after the 1st time too; just give us a quick load... The story is an incoherent mess with characters you never give any shit about. Even the baby that magically appears inside you (or something like that; as I said, nothing makes any sense). But at least you can read an alien language and operate their machines... And this from a really great first game. I should've trusted the reviews on this game; although mediocre ratings are still too high imho. Even wasting time on this review is too much for this garbage. I know: this is a really harsh review, but that's just how I feel about it. I can't sugar coat it.

Different but fantastic

There are lots of negative reviews of this game which is fair because it's not what most people expected; me included. It's a pretty linear game with a story that's hit or miss depending on your taste and your relationships with the the characters. It can be difficult to get invested in a character that's very different to yourself and in the beginning of the game I wasn't hooked. However after playing the game a couple of hours as the creators intended and really soaking up the surroundings and the atmosphere it got a lot better. Storywize as well. It's a beautiful game even though the graphics themselves aren't amazing. The environments are varied and interesting but the textures are so so. The scarefactor depends largely on how you play the game and I recommend playing this at night by yourself in the dark and just allow yourself to get immersed. It is a scary game if you try not to run trough everything and I had a lot of fun with it. This game shouldn't be directly compared to it's predecessors because it is it's own thing but the name comes with expectations that can be ruined if you want Amnesia: The Dark Descent 2. As a standalone game I think you should give it a chance and you will still get the Frictional Games feel. Especially if you play it as intended.

A Dark Descent Vibe but a bit short

I was looking forward to getting stuck into another horror game from Frictional games. The puzzles were what you'd expect and quite fun to solve. It was a bit of a slow burner at the start where it introduces characters and mechanics but eventually it picks up. Once you get there, you're avoiding enemies and experiencing the great sound design the other games had. As for the story, there are cutscenes, pages to find and stuff written on walls. You can piece it together and get a good feel for whats happened. I was taking my time and investigating everything but it only took about 8.5 hours which I thought was a bit short and that was with multiple endings. Overall I enjoyed it and would recommend it to fans of the series.

Good but not groundbreaking

The short version is, if you like a story driven atmosphere rich experience with frictional's special touch, you will like this. The graphics are the best the studio has ever produced, sound is as good as ever, the setting is quite original for a horror game, at least for the desert parts. I went into this game not remembering much about the Dark Descent's story and maybe that's why I have nothing negative to say about it. So why doesn't it deserve 5 stars? Well, first thing is, it is a refinement of what came before it. Everything works well, but there's nothing groundbraking. The story gets pretty good half way in, before that I was not very much engaged because the beginning is lacking a hook. Then there are some graphical bugs, not many but every one of them took me a little bit out of the experience. The light and darkness mechanic was ok in my opinion, I never lacked any matches or oil for the lamp, but it also introduced a habit of sprinting forward with you match to try and light as many lamps as possible. This is contrary to the slow and scary crawl forward that such a game is supposed to elicit. In the end I think that the plastering of Amnesia in the title, while understandable for marketing reasons did this game a disservice as comparisons will inevitably be drawn. This is a great game on its own, just not a particularly impressive Amnesia sequel.

hm...

I thought this could be a somewhat promising story perhaps similar to Rachel Foster but actually I don't think so I quit out after the first portal and have read some notes scattered around lall over ike trail clues to make it short. I am terribly bored with this game. technically neither is AR the sharpest Knife in the drawer in respect of game optimization graphically I thought sometimes I am playing Quake2 Terrible game.
