Overview:

Sam and the hyperkinetic rabbity thing known as Max have taken a break from their fizzball marathon and are on the case once again! Team up with the self-styled Freelance Police as you dispense your own unique brand of criminal justice. Uncover clues, interrogate suspects, crack six bizarre cases, and find out why Sam & Max is the funniest game around.

In this first season of Sam & Max, you’ll meet crazy characters who are sure to leave an impression. Whether you’re trading quips with a low-life like Jimmy Two-Teeth, swapping metaphysics with the inordinately cheerful founder of Prismatology Hugh Bliss, dropping by Bosco’s Inconvenience to pick up the latest in conspiracy theories and some Truth Serum (if you can afford it), you’ll find the trademark Sam & Max humor in every conversation. While you’re playing, be sure to say hello to Sybil, who changes jobs at the drop of a hat, and run an election campaign against Honest Abe himself.

Enjoy the malfeasance (Max’s second-favorite kind of feasance!) and the mayhem when you hit the road with Sam & Max Save the World today!

This series is definitely enjoyable. Great humor compensates for uneven writing. As for rehashing of locations and characters, it is a double-edged sword. On the one hand it is fun to see how the locations change over time, on the other it might annoy some players.
The difficulty of the puzzles is nowhere near that of the original, and experienced adventurers will probably blowread more through the first episodes (at least), even though the difficulty mounts a bit later on. Most puzzles are fairly original (it avoids triggering my "What, I'm supposed to contruct a fishing rod AGAIN??" syndrome) and the puzzles always follow the same in-game logic, so you will not encounter random-seeming puzzles or puzzles that break the flow of the game. The puzzles and the humor are intertwined well. This partly makes up for the lack of difficulty in my eyes.
This game is primarily meant to entertain, and it does that very well. So well, that the first episodes roughly can be completed in the same time you'd watch a movie (90mins-2 hours), provided you don't get stuck, later episodes take a bit more time.
All in all, the low difficulty level combined with the humor makes this series a great choice for people who never really got into adventures and people who just want to have an enjoyable evening in front of the pc.
I'm not sure if you should buy this just because of nostalgia, the humor is the same as the original, but the puzzle part is not. If you're looking for truly demanding puzzles, you should look elsewhere.

Uneven, but totally worth it

Here's a review from a die-hard Sam & Max fan: the game isn't perfect, but what in this world is?
Pros: Great writing, great voice acting, good music, often hilarious scenes and characters, manageable interface, classic adventure gaming fun in the LucasArts style.
Cons: Environments and characters get re-used a lot in early episodes, the first two antagonists are prettyread more annoying, and the writing isn't always at its laugh-a-minute highs.
I still heartily recommend this to anyone who has liked Sam & Max or LucasArts adventure games, especially if you can find the whole season for $20 or less. I bought the DVD at full price ($39) when it was new, and felt a little shortchanged. I'd say these episodes are worth $4 a pop easy, though.

Brilliant and Hilarious Adventure Game

Sam and Max Save the World is hilarious. That's pretty much all you need to know. The humour alone makes this game worth it. The storyline is wacky, but entertaining. The characters are funny and voiced excellently. Overall, this is my favourite Sam and Max season.
It takes a couple of episodes to get into the swing of things, but it just gets better and better with each episoderead more until you get to the amazing, side-splitting Episode 4: Abe Lincoln Must Die! And the quality of the final two episodes is just as good.
If you like adventure games, buy this game now. If you like humour, buy this game now. If you like both? You're going to love this game!
