Starkrun: HD update is free this DLC is not... Link is from the Dev... pretty crappy but yeah :(
Yes, I know, now. What they delivered versus what they initially promised is much different. Supposedly, from the initial developer info, anyone who already owned the game would get the CoT DLC free of charge. And originally, the CoT update was to contain the HD Update as an upgrade to the entire TWII game. Now I am given to understand that CoT is a stand-alone addition which does not upgrade the TWII original game in any fashion whatever. The so-called "HD Update" that I downloaded from Steam (I own both Steam and GOG versions ot TWII Velvet Edition) was, according to Steam, a whopping 7.5 MBs (yes Megabytes, not Gigabytes) in size. I immediately saw a noticeable improvement in the rendering engine for TWII--but of course with such a small upgrade for the engine, there were no new textures included for the TWII game itself, etc. Big disappointment.
Some people never saw the original developer announcements, but I did, and I've spoken with others on the Internet who also saw it. It never
crossed my mind that they'd pull this bait'n switch sort of thing--especially for us early purchasers of TWII several years ago. I don't think GOG has even received the HD Update yet.
TWII needed the work! Not a whole lot of work, but the content could definitely be improved markedly, and it would change the entire saleability of the game--but, alas, such is not the case. TWII was a very good game that could have a *great*--with some work. Ah, well...
EDIT: It Appears that the GOG version of Velvet has indeed changed and it is the 2.0 version of TWII: Velvet. (THat's 1.37 with the tiny 2.0 update added.) Am downloading now and will verify here later. Have no idea why they could not simply have made a ~7mb patch, however...;)
Edit 2: I don't know if the GOG version has been patched--the TWII executable reads 1.3.7, but the files have definitely changed in size compared with the .xx.24 former version--but curiously, GOG's ID for these files is
1.3.7_(2.0)_(13261).exe but the Steam version reads 2.0.0.0 , and when the program is run and the initial setup screen is displayed, the GOG version ID's itself as 1.3.7, while the Steam version ID's itself as 2.0. Very confusing at this point...;) There is a 100MB + difference in size, with the current GOG files being that much larger than the former xx.24 files. As the only upgrade I saw for Steam's 1.3.7 ID'ed its size at 7.5MBs, I can't imagine why the GOG file sizes are > 100MBs larger than the older GOG files TWII install files.
