Only after it's converted to Melitele's Heart. That is the ceremony that removes the curse, as you stated.

Before it's converted, it does not give a bonus to armor, as stated by another poster; it reduces armor.

But we were talking about after the ceremony.

You gain the bonus/malus just having it in the inventory! Btw, I skipped the quest for now, first I kill the kayran, then I go and do all the other side-quests.
