Edit: Apparently this was a glitch, I cleared the runes in one of the rooms before starting the quest... :/

After going to an earlier save and restarting the third act, I waited till after starting the quest and everything worked out fine. The riddles aren't that difficult to understand, just be wary of this glitch.

Old message...

I started in the second room, do we have to start in the first room before any other rooms will function?

I've been trying to do the signs in order by the hints, but I think that there are language translation issues in how to interpret the meanings of the signs and the hints for English speaking people. The hints don't appear to have any relation or logic to the meanings of the signs. So, I'm wondering if everyone just ignores the hints and tries 24 random combinations until they get the right combination?

The Game Guide has no illustrations to properly identify the signs, believe it or not. This thread properly identifies the signs.

re-Edit 2:

Credit given to cjrgreen for responding quickly to the distressed call... since I can't give credit to myself for solving the glitch. :P

Glad you got it worked out.

Some of the poems are obscure, but all of them are close enough that you can work the sequence out from the poem in English. Remember that one of the symbols is sometimes Art and sometimes Death.

The one that bothers me the most is

Glittering fish
Dying on a fresco
Struck by lightning
Fish has to be Animal.
Fresco has to be Art, so neither Dying nor "Struck by Lightning" can be Death.
Lightning has to be Sky.
So Dying can only be Time.

And the correct sequence is Animal - Time - Art - Sky

The Poem/Hints were happily not the problem. However, identifying the right signs is a bit tricky just reading the Rune tomes alone.

This issue was terribly annoying. I skipped the first room where we come into the city, but went down into the second room near the people playing dice before officially starting the quest. I managed to solve the riddle just fiddling with the signs on the third try. heh...

Then after getting the books (I bought two really expensive one before buying the right Rune tomes and blew all my gold). I read the Gargoyle book and talked to the quest dude to start the quest but no combination I tried worked in the third room, or the first room.

The writing has been pretty good throughout the game and consistent so I was thoroughly stumped (and annoyed). The only things I could think of when the bug crept into my gameplay was that it was either a bug, or a translation issue for the hints. Someone mentioned the bug on the Wiki so I was lucky enough to have kept early saves for Act III and re-entered the city. :D

Sorry for the necromancy, but thank you thank you thank you! I thought I had broken the quest by clearing the runes in a room as soon as I got to Loc Muinne before grabbing the contract. I was stuck on the Glittering Fish poem and couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. Your way of explaining it worked, and I can now continue. You saved me from having to restart the entire Loc Muinne area. I was pretty damn far in it too.
