Did you try updating your graphics card drivers? Which one are you using?

Either you've installed 15 year old graphic drivers (which should be impossible in Win10) or you did not install any graphic driver at all.

Or you had the terrible idea to execute Settlers 4 in compatibility mode (which is neither necessary nor does any good).
Has this been solved? I try running with DXGL and I still get the Hardware/Software 3d initialization error. I have a Nvidia dual graphics setup, and I have S4 set to only run on the integrated card in Nvidia settings.
With DXGL I can only build structures when the resolution is the same as my screen resolution. Stretching up a smaller resolution does not work, except for the menu. I'd like to play this in a window, but for some reason every resolution except for 1920x1080 crashes on me! So I have to play this in full screen. Also 1920x1080 lags considerably more than the default resolutions.
The game did run on my Windows 10 but the framerate was awful. I tried DXGL but it only got worse - the screen went black when I launched the game.

Fortunately there is another solution. I used DDrawCompat - (I can't post links, so try searching "narzoul's DDrawCompat", it's a github project) - and it fixed the FPS issue. I just put the ddraw.dll in the Exe subdirectory. I can now run the game smoothly, even with hardware rendering, higher quality textures and filtering.

Hopefully some of you will also find this solution helpful.

The Germans have a patch that fixes this issue, here's a quick step by step guide for installing it in English:
1. Go to this link.
2. Select the "Versionen" tab
3. Click the link designating the latest version ("Version 2.0.1" at time of writing), you will be taken to mega.nz where they're hosting the patcher
4. Select the option to download through your browser. The download should commence.
5. Launch the program as an administrator.
6. Select "Weiter>"
7. Click "Durchsuchen..." and select the Settlers 4 folder on your PC (default path is C:\GOG Games\Settlers IV GOLD)
8. Select "Installieren"
9. It will install. Select "Beenden" when done

When you launch the executable for S4 it should launch just fine.

Many thanks to Markus on validstrategies for writing the post to begin with. Here is his post in English (from google translate):

When you start Settlers 4 GOLD EDITION 8/10 may come under Windows in an error, which outputs the following message:

Software 3D: Error initializing Graphic Interface!
Software 3D: Failed to start the graphics output!
Hardware 3D: Error Initializing Graphic Interface!
Hardware 3D: Failed to start the graphics output!

Subsequently, the startup process stops, Settlers 4 GOLD EDITION therefore can not be executed. This Graphic Interface fix corrects the issue.

Please note that the charging of Settlers 4 GOLD EDITION after entering the game under the above-mentioned Operating systems delayed (about +8 seconds). This is due to the fact that for the correction of the error must be held additional file processing before Settlers 4 GOLD EDITION can be started.

A known problem is also that the hardware acceleration can be activated (no longer) in the game. The solution for this error is still pending, because so far it is not certain whether this can ever be solved by an external intervention. Changing the resolution in software mode, however, is furthermore possible.

Additional information:

The download is available as a zip file and has a circumference of about 3 MB. is hosted the Graphic Interface Fix on mega.nz.

The Graphic Interface Fix was developed specifically for the GOG version of the game and does not work with other versions. Through this program, only relevant files of Settlers 4 GOLD EDITION be modified; otherwise the game remains unaffected. Existing Scores are not affected. This Graphic Interface Fix is free and open to everyone. If this program is applied to a GOG-Galaxy-install the game, be no modification to GOG Galaxy itself.

Seems like the patch Mustang678 posted helped a little, however it didn't fix it completely for me. I'm on W10 x64 with a R9 380 AMD and now after applying the patch The Settlers just starts but it becomes "not responding"... any idea what could be causing this? I don't get the error messages anymore, but I can't play it either. I didn't select any compatibility modes or whatnot, just vanilla install and the above mentioned patch.

Did you try a compatibility mode? It sounds silly but sometimes running in 98/XP mode fixes the strangest bugs on GOG Games

Just in case it's an AMD thing perhaps try disabling the GPU and running off of your onboard graphics. S4 shouldn't require too much power to run I think

Failing that, try reinstalling

Looks like it might be confused on where your screen is when it's drawing. Have you tried running it in windowed mode?
Hi,

in window mode it worked not correctly but thanks.

after several tries i found the error.

dxgl did something strange. it made a new s4 option but withour the name. there were some settings that didnt work.
-> first png(wrong)

i undo some of the settings and now finally it works :D
-> second png(correct)

Maybe it helps some other guys to :)

greets dasanyx
