Barnacle: Fixed this. I was very confused - I was running into the same problem but I have a different build from all the people here.

TL;DR: Run the game in compatability mode with Windows XP Service Pack 3.
avatar
Oedi: That may work with desktop PCs, but on my notebook with switchable graphics (intel+nvidia) i still get the same error with xp sp3 compatibilty mode.
It does seem there are a couple issues that all have different fixes. Truly an annoying issue. I hope you get it working!

yeah I'm using DXGL, works very well.
I have a similar problem. From the desktop shortcut I only get the Settlers IV banner, which then disappears and from the autorun (via the disk) I can get to the menu, but when I click on singleplayer I also get the banner which then disappears.

Does anyone have any new solutions?

I've tried all of the suggestions so far and I'm using Windows 10 on a HP envy m6 (Intel/AMD graphics).
Could someone explain how to use DXGL as all I've done on that is add the desktop shortcut (I'm not sure which options I need to change)
Thanks

I've tried all those and it still doesn't work.
The thing is though, that I don't actually get an error message; it just doesn't work.
I've attached two pictures to show what happens after I click on the Settler 4 shortcut. If I click on Autorun (on the disks menu) I go the the menu screen, then when I click on Singleplayer, the same happens.
After the second picture, nothing happens anymore...

Hi, l1lvink!
You mention a disk... Are you trying to use a physical copy of the game? If so, which one is it?
(I have found out that different versions works out in different ways... I am working on a tweak around DXGL based on this, in fact).

I would like to try to help you... So please, let us know about that! =)

Yes, I have a physical copy, but I installed it onto my laptop and from there on I used the installation on the laptop.
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by which version I have, so I took photos of the box and CD.

Thank you for the pictures!

The version you have would be"English Base Game", or vanilla. The vanilla game suffers from the 3D error a lot more than other versions... Have you patched the game to the latest version? Do you have any expansion packs?

If you have patched it and the problem still persist, I could experiment a little with my own vanilla version... It is a german copy, though, so the chances of any of my solutions working with yours would be around 80%, maybe(Settlers IV was REALLY a huge mess, code-wise. XD )

Hmm, the version of the game makes sense to me.
I haven't patched the game to the latest version, nor have I added any expansion packs (what I'm using is literally just what came off the disk).

I know that this disk works, as I used it on my previous PC (though this was some years ago).

I would recommend patching it, then. I remember(also, some time ago) having multiple versions of Settlers IV installed at the same time, and even if the game worked fine, the patchless vanilla version wouldn't start(I am speaking of Windows 7 here, which had far less problems running the game than Windows 8), even though the disk worked just fine on older computers.
I also remember getting the exact same error that is being discussed on this topic. :P
So, since the only think I could think of that was different between those versions was the game version, that's what I would suggest doing.

You'll probably have an old version installed, so download both of these patches. Try running the first one(2.00.1050 to 2.50.1516)first, and then v2.50.1516. Hopefully, and in addition to the rest of fixes present on this topic, you should be able to get your game running!
Hey guys..

I got wierd problem.

I've installed the game, but when I click on the icon shortcut on desktop.. nothing happens, quick loading and nothing more (program dont show on the Task Mananger as well).

If I try to launch with AutoRun, I see the main menu, but still nothing happens when I click singel player.

I'm not sure if its an install error.. but when i start the game it shows up in my taskmanager like 4 times with almost no mem usage and never launches... tried a completely uninstall and reinstall. Nothing. tried different compatibilities still nothing. Anyone have a fix?

What OS do you guys have? Are you using the GOG version, or some retail edition?

Let's see if we can fix your game, folks!

Its fine mate :)
I was needed to download patch and thats it.
Hey Guys ! I have the following problems !

1) The menu bar in the editor is buggy.
I use Windows 10. In the compability tab, I only changed the "Run in 16 Bit" option (else the editor won't even load).
I really don't know how to get rid of this buggy menu bar.
(cf. image 2)

2) I use DXGL for the game itself. However, the grass turns black sometimes ! That's really annoying... :(
