Out of the blue, whenever I play Outlaws, I hear music from my hard drive. It's LOUD and completely drowns out the game's audio to the point where I can't play the game. The music appears to be some random tracks off my hard drive.

Ironically, the problem was discussed in this forum, under the post "No music". Sadly for me, the fixes did not work.

Description of the problem
When I play Outlaws, some random music tracks get played during the game, very loudly, drowning out the game audio. When I press escape to pause the game, the music track pauses too; when I press escape to resume the game, the audio track resumes. I tried configuring the in-game audio mix (effects, music, taunts, etc.) and set all the levels to zero, but the music persists, indicating that the music being played is probably under the control of Windows, not Outlaws.

The tracks themselves all belong to the same album (oddly, it's an album I haven't listened to in years, so I don't quite understand how THESE particular songs were picked by Windows, but... whatever!)

The audio tracks play whenever the game is running. They don't play while in menus, nor in the game menus before the game starts. They do play when I quit the game.

What I've Tried
I tried deleting the audio tracks from my hard drive, and oddly, that didn't fix the problem; they must be cached somewhere.

On the advice of the aforementioned post ("No music") I tried renaming the executable olwin.exe to foo.exe, but that didn't work either.

Additionally, I made the recommended modifications to the registry. The registry settings weren't exactly the way described in "No music" (for example, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Custom was an empty folder) but I made the modifications as described, with no success. I then took a hatchet to the registry and deleted a whole bunch of stuff related to olwin.exe (of course, I backed everything up first!) and sadly, the problem still persisted. The response to No Music was back in 2011, over a decade ago, so no wonder -- things probably have changed since then (Windows 11 wasn't around, for starters).

Next I started to monkey with olcfg, which I probably should've done before hacking at the registry. The Aureal A3D Interactive driver just crashed the game. Multimedia crashed the game also. So I left the driver at DirectSound. But when I toggled "CD Music Active" off, the audio tracks stopped, but predictably, so did Outlaw's music, and as we all know, the music from this game is part of what makes the game so awesome. I definitely want the music back.

So that's where I am. I know a little bit about the problem, but don't know how to fix it. I've tried a bunch of things that seemed like they should work, but so far, nothing did.

Any ideas?
