Hi everyone, i just bought the game (again) today.
I've had it years ago, tryed to download everywhere i could find.
Yesterday i'm just on GoG and then i'm like "hey let's buy the NWN collection with NWN1 and 2 inside! They were great games!"
And well, NWN1 installation went fine and I was like "Let's play this..." I clicked and "play... this..." waited.
Nothing happened.
But i'm not a dumb guy so, propriety, click on main exe... nwmain... nwn... the launcher goes like "Launch, Update" blabla. I check update, nothing to do it's already in 1.69, ok fine! Start.
Loading screen (the small window with the eye you know?) but then, nothing happens. Color in my computer returns as normal and... nothing. Just nothing.
I checked all your solutions (compatibility, well i already done it before anyway, but it never fixed it for me in any games anyway) then the main2 the guy above said. Nothing works.
Game just won't start.
I'm on win 7 64. Computer should be powerful enough for that old game as I can run much "recent" games (not like very recent ones, but still)
NWN1 was even the problem on my previous computer a friend gave me one time his GoG version and it didn't work at all already, it seems like the GoG version have some trouble or i don't know but it seems there is something awkward.
It's the first time i buy anything on GoG and i'm really disappointed tbh i don't think i will buy anything if nothing fix it, it wasn't expensive but as a fresh start, it goes really badly for me.
I've took NWN2 as well i'm installing right now if this one doesn't work too, well i will never buy again on GoG.

Can someone help me in any way ? I am running as administrator, XP3 compat', so don't try just those "easy" things, seems like something else, please ? Thanks.

Just to make sure:
Always launch from the nwmain.exe, not a launcher, Gog or NWNlauncher, skip those.
Make sure under nwmain.exe properties, compatibility tab:
Check: Run this in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (SP3)
Check: Run this program as administrator.

Now if the screen flashes a few times then fails, NWN sometimes has problems playing movies.

Under the same location at nwmain.exe.
Edit nwn.ini
Under Display options:
SafeMovie=1
Disable Intro Movies=1

SafeMovie is likely there, change 0 to 1.
Disable Intro Movies, likely needs to be added, do exactly as I have it, that is right out of my nwn.ini, so I know it works. Into movies caused me to crash out sometimes, and the Logo movies were damn annoying.
So did it work? I'm thinking about buying copies for four friends of mine. My brother has the game still, and it runs fine on his old rig which is actually a server he re purposed from his work when they got a new one. He's been making a pretty awesome server that we can use as a substitute for Pen and Paper for visual purposes. Before I go buying copies for my buddies I wanna make sure I can run it. Does anyone have any information concerning running the game on 8.1 or 10? I have windows 7 64x but i don't think my friends have older OS.
I am also having a problem with NWN DiaEd crushing. While it launches successfully after installation, when I start meddling with video settings, it freezes for a while, and then it crashes. It didn't crash after enabling fast grass rendering, but it did when I set the resolution to 1080 60Hz. I tried changing back the settings through nwnconfig, and launching nwnmain, but it kept crashing right on the launch. Also, for some reason, I could not enable high-res fonts.

I'm running this on HP laptop, with A12 APU, 8GB RAM, and 64bit W7. And I did not install the game in Program Files.
Game crashes on start, not installed on C: drive, I always have UAC disabled and I automatically run programs as administrator.

found nwnmain.exe, set compatibility to XP SP3 and making a character now.
Ok I was having the same problem it seems as many of you. Trying to run in Win 7 having compatibility issues. There is a patch update that you can not download using the updater because the bioware site updater has not functioned for this game in a long time.

Google search the following:

Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark English Patch 1.69

I am not going to say which site I chose because I don't know if that might be a posting no-no however I "patched the scrolls" so to speak <wink wink>

Download the patch needed, In my case it was the english windows patch 1.69. YOu will get a zip file that contains a patch updater. Run it and Bingo Bango Bongo.. The game was up and running... No changing to Win XP SP2 or 3 or whatever.

I hope that helps others.
I tried all of the fixes in this post but found that the game would only work with sound completely disabled. As I understand it, NWN sometimes has issues with Realtek onboard sound chips, which I have. The solution was to delete the following files from my 'GOG Games\NWN Diamond\miles' folder:

msssoft.m3d
Msseax.m3d
mssds3d.m3d
Mssa3d.m3d

After deleting these files, the games runs fine with sound under RAD Game Tools or DirectSound3D in the sound options. I'm running Windows 10.

Hope that helps someone.

Thanks Narmy93, I was having the same problem and your solution works for me!
So I was able to fix the issue myself and I hope this helps anyone here having this problem. I found this on another forum, simply go to the directory where the game is and change the nwmain.exe to something else. I named mine gamenw.exe and it plays with no problems.

I tried some of the fixes labeled before and while they worked once or twice, something would still cause the game to crash. I don't know how or why but this fixed it for me.
I've never been able to get this game to run under W10 at all, well it does run and plays the intro but just crash each time after this. Never have found a solution at all but was fine on W7 and all compatibility modes and other solutions have never solved it but live in hope that it'll work one day.

Hey everyone. I am running Windows 10 and at first i was getting runtime errors, even after installing DX9-10. This is something simple i have tested out and it worked for me,find your game launch file which in named nwmain and change it. I changed mine to nwmain2 and launched it from the renamed shortcut and it worked,i was able to run the game from there. For some odd reason the game does not like running from the GOG game launcher and wont run from the desktop icon it gives when it downloaded from the launcher. So make sure you put a shortcut of the renamed file on your desktop to run from.

I have no idea how you figure this out but it fix my problem with my laptop lagging NWN to the point of it being unplayable.

Thank You very much :)
I have just recently purchased this program and it doesn't seem to want to run on Windows 10. The toolset works. NWN does nothing after it ask if I want to allow it to changes to my device.

I have changes compatibility and set to run as administrator.

Any suggestions?

I really don't know what it is....

I would really like to ban Win10 from the world.....

It is f*cking directx 9.0c....

just a few threads down.

https://www.gog.com/forum/neverwinter_nights_series/nwn1_andor_nwn2_windows_10

Are people too lazy to read anymore?

Or even just 2 posts up, DIRECTX 9.0C !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not attacking you in general, BUT WHY DO PEOPLE NOT READ A BIT MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I personally already told like 20 people here on the boards directx9.0c and directplay....

But no, we expect others to do the job for us....
Oh did I mentioned, it SAYS SO ON THE F*CKING store page:

mended), NVidia, ATI/AMD or Intel 3D graphics card compatible with DirectX 7 (>>>>>compatible with DirectX 9 recommended<<<<<), Mouse, Keyboard.
rant off.....

sorry being a bit tired and a bit 'pissed' off....

For precise links just check via google or whatever for my username and include directx and directplay in the search.....

Afterwards the game shall start without any problem. IIRC no comp. setting needed (but not sure ....so don't nail me for it :P )

Follow the hints i posted with those downloads.

Have fun and peace ;)

PS: AND NOW GOG IS PISSING ME OFF AGAIN, THIRD ATTEMPT TRYING TO POST IT JUST BECAUSE I FORGOTTEN ONE LITTLE THING, IT DOESN'T LIKE A SPECIFIC WORD F*CK YOU
