After I spent the money to buy this game, I discover that apparently no one has ever gotten it working on Win 7-64. I've tried all possible combination of compatibility modes, and the few that don't either crash on save/load or have no Quicktime video (notably the Windows XP modes) crash as soon as I pull a lever in the Clock Tower, thus rendering the game useless. I've tried installing it under Windows XP Mode (crashes on start), and even, in an act of desperation, tried to create a Windows 98 VM using VirtualBox, only to discover Win98 can't run on processors over 2.2Ghz. Is there anything else I can try? Should I just try for a refund and be slightly bitter?

To get Myst Materpiece edition working on Windowws 7 64 bit you must uninstall quicktime, then install the version of quicktime Myst ME was made with. (6.4 available on Apple's website here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120297) This should make the game run as is. If it does NOT run, run it in compatibility mode for Windows XP
This has worked for me with the disk version of Myst ME, and with several friends using various versions. Note, however, that running the quicktime version I mentioned will disable your visual themes, making your desktop ugly. When you quit, Quicktime may be open in the task bar still, just close it from the bottom right icon to return your theme to normal.
Thanks for the suggestion, that does indeed allow Myst to run to some degree (on WinXP SP3 compatibility mode). However, it still randomly crashes every few minutes, so it's still not terribly useful.
link is dead here is an alternate.

I''ve been waiting FOREVER for a fix to this too, and I'm really displeased that there still isn't a solution. Does GOG even care about the fact that this doesn't work for us? There should at least be a warning on the purchase page that it doesn't work/isn't stable for Win 7 64 bit...
I know you're disappointed and upset with that... but it does say on the game page:
"Compatible With: Windows XP and Windows Vista (32 & 64-bit)"
http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/myst_masterpiece_edition
And GOG has said already that Win7 is a work in progress
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/windows_7_compatibility_work_in_progress
Many just work, but you might have to gamble... and if they do come up with a solution that provides compatibility later on, then all you have to do is redownload.
Sucks to have to run a gog game in virtual pc, but it works very well. (Virtual PC, windows xp, running on top of windows 7 64 bit)
I have WIn 7 64 Bit and it works flawlessly on it. I had to do nothing special at all, but it could just be luck. I had no issues with quicktime as stated above. I do have UAC automatically off. I did not run it in compatibility mode. I know this won't help any of you, but it does work on my 64-bit setup.
anything new on this. i can't get the Myst ME (download from Gog ) to play in Vista Home Edition 64 bit system. it says it cant read Myst\sys32setup.exe...If i go into the file i can play the movies on the quicktime player, great sound, video but i cant install or run the game....i am also experiencing the original Myst disc appearing upside down on my monitor???..all works well, but it's upside down? Anyone? any idea at all??..aarrrrrgh

Hello. 1st poster here.

i`m running RealMyst on Win 7, 64 with no crashes at all. The problem I`m seeing now is the game seems slightly stuttery on the rock\ship world outside and i`m trying to see if I can improve the smoothness.

But I did at first have problems. To solve this I did these things:

Go into the RealMyst game folder and find a little file called: RealMystSetup and run it.

A utility will pop up. Select Direct 3D Hal. Do NOT select the Direct 3D T&L Hal- That`s what was causing my constant crashes. Set res and everything as you like it, but the Direct 3D thing is important. Apply and quit out.

Go back to desktop select your RealMyst icon, select Run as administrater and choose compatibility and run in Windows XP srvice pack 2 or 3.

Then start game.

You should see a smoother game and NO crashes. I haven`t had one since I`ve done this and no corrupt movies either.

Hope that helps.

p.s. I did not use Quicktime, although I did install to try and fix my problems, and later uninstalled it.

OK, so it's 5 years after that last post on this subject so wondering what the current status is on this issue. I just bought all the Myst Series games on GOG because I got the impression on the web and initially on the site they provided a solution that worked on Win 7 (I have Win7 64-bit Professional).

I was just about to download and it shows it works on Win XP and Vista. I don't need to know what it originally worked on. I also don't have the time to mess up or screw around with a computer I use for work so just wondering if it is a simple download and play situation now or something I still need to hack together after the download.

Thanks in advance for any current info on the subject. Amie
According to this one thread to get the Myst series to work in Windows Vista, 7, both 32 bit and 64-bit.... Myst ME should install correctly... here is the link, should help with the others too...

I also have Win7 64-bit and I can run Myst ME.
I got it to work by doing the following:
Go to Myst.exe properties -> compatibility tab -> Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windoes 98 / Windows ME -> Check "Disable Visual Themes" -> Check "Run this program as an administrator"

first time in my Gog history of 200+ games a game wont work, using all of the above suggestions for 64bit win7 computer. The game just continually hangs up at the same standard parts (generator room, library etc, anywhere there is intense stuff going on)

shame really. it was worth a shot getting a copy on gog to see if i could have seamless play without all the hassle and tweaking of other sites
