After I spent the money to buy this game, I discover that apparently no one has ever gotten it working on Win 7-64. I've tried all possible combination of compatibility modes, and the few that don't either crash on save/load or have no Quicktime video (notably the Windows XP modes) crash as soon as I pull a lever in the Clock Tower, thus rendering the game useless. I've tried installing it under Windows XP Mode (crashes on start), and even, in an act of desperation, tried to create a Windows 98 VM using VirtualBox, only to discover Win98 can't run on processors over 2.2Ghz. Is there anything else I can try? Should I just try for a refund and be slightly bitter?

mintee: shame really. it was worth a shot getting a copy on gog to see if i could have seamless play without all the hassle and tweaking of other sites

no, actually, i sort of gave up but i may yet as they do try and help out. i wont ask for a refund either as i expect them to patch up the probs for 64 bit in the future . i hope
It works for me.

But I've had my share of trouble with it. Basically, it worked perfect but had a white border around the (full screen) window, which I hated, and the menu wouldn't fade out. So I tried every compatibility option and had all the typical quicktime related freezups and issues (but the menu/border problem was solved). Tried every version of quicktime under the sun before just doing a fresh install. By some absolutely crazy chance, I copied the unmodified, default compatibility options exe and pasted it into the same folder. FOR SOME REASON, that copied and pasted exe runs beautifully without the window and menu in view. I have verified that this works on my PC several different times I've installed the game. I don't understand it, but I like it.

I found that Myst Masterpiece Edition and Riven (10th Anniversary DVD and other releases also rather) works on Windows 7 64-bit (so 32-bit also rather) ONLY when QuickTime version 4.1.2 is installed, and "Disable Visual Themes" is checked.

I don't know if it is works on Vista, 8.1, 10 from newer Windows.

realMyst: Masterpiece Edition v2.0 should works on Windows 7 and 8 (RATHER) from newer Windows but I'm NOT sure (some people can have problems - maybe).
It's more luck if anyone is able to get it working, and the annoying thing is that GOG still list it as working on WIndows 7. I'd honestly pay for a "I will get Myst working on Windows 7 PCs" Kickstarter at this point. It'd be nice if the programmers released the source code, or something.

i bet it's the famous quick-time issue.
if you care to try and fix it, then uninstall quicktime and try to get rid of as much as you can of that version of quicktime.
then reboot, and install the quicktime that comes with the game.

i can't remember what i had to do, but i got it working 100% fine on win7 (64-bit).
i might've turned on some compatibility thing or something, but i can't remember.

but yeah, i've had my share of issues with the first three myst games. so much for compatibility.

I honestly cant be bothered to mess around with them anymore, the many hours spent tweaking the games have pretty much tarnished any nostalgia value left in them but really gog needs to put a disclaimer in their ad that there are complications with 64 bit customers.

yeah, i can understand that.

i have gotten the game to work flawlessly on this setup (win7 64-bit) before:
not a single crash, i could save without issues, all sounds and clips/movies played just fine. it was a completely smooth experience for me. i do remember i had to 'mess around' a bit before it would work properly, though.

so i'm going to install the game myself again, and keep track of what 'steps' i take to get the game to work.
and maybe it won't help anyone else at all, because maybe it's rather some kind of hardware-incompatibility or something.
hopefully it can help someone to get the game to work, because i'm just annoyed that most of you can't play this great game.

edit: sigh. it's already working. sounds play, movies play, i can save/load without issues. no crashes. all i did was:
uninstall quicktime
reboot
install myst ME
install quicktime lite 1.4.1 (the setup will ask you to install this)
(i only checked "QuickTime components [version 7.69.80.9]", and i also checked "Install Apple Application Support 1.4.1 Lite")

that's it. i did not even have to check any of the compatibility options in the shortcut/exe.
i'm wondering if there maybe are certain options in the nvidia control panel or CCC, that could interfere with myst ME..?
because i've had my share of issues with options from present video card drivers, when trying to play older games.
it's probably crucial to uninstall your current version of QT, and install the version provided by the myst ME installer.

i've attached a screenshot of my nvidia (version 344.11) settings, in case anyone wants to check if any of those settings are the problem.

I wonder, has anyone gotten it to run via Linux and Wine? Also, as has been stated before, realMyst seems to work fine with just XP compatibility settings. Go figure.
