Does anyone know how to resolve issues with custom covers?

With the recent 2.0.48 and 2.0.49 update, a majority of my Steam covers (about 500 games) were destroyed. Some games defaulted to an entirely blank cover. Not like you'd see on a game without a cover set, but just an empty rectangle. The blank covers can't be replaced with an image because the Game->Edit->Media tab displays the error "could not load the image" and doesn't allow you to interact with the cover import option. Other Steam covers were replaced with a horribly cropped or stretched image that also can't be replaced. Importing replacement covers fails with the error "Image override failed". The 'override' error now also occurs for all attempts to import any cover for any game existing or new!

I've scoured the forum for solutions, and so far have:
- disconnected steam plugin
- deleted the steam webcache and steam plugin folder
- removed and reinstalled Galaxy
- reconnected the steam plugin

And now even more games are blank and misaligned. This is incredibly frustrating, as I'd manually set all of the covers before updating, and not only was all the work removed, I'm now unable to fix the errors caused by the update.
There was a thread that mentioned you could drop webp cover images into the games' webcache folder, which I've tried, but they are deleted in the background on a Galaxy restart.

So I began with a set of carefully curated covers, only to find that after the updates, I'm stuck with a collection of blank, overly cropped, and stretched covers that look like absolute hell and can't be changed.

Is there any way to import covers for Steam or any other game ever again?

And if so, is there any way to backup the database to ensure recovery in the (seemingly very likely) event that something goes awry again?

I have had this problem as well since 2020, a fair number of my games have a blank box art, the reset doesnt work and adding a new image gives the same error. I don't use any plugins though, just my gog games.
Clean uninstall & deleting cache bla bla bla, nothing worked.

I have switched to list view and have given up hope of ever finding a fix

Yeah, I have a custom game that I couldn't import custom images for ("Could not load the image", kept nuking my custom .webp images and it didn't let me drag 'n drop in Galaxy).

Eventually I was able to divine what the names of the files should be and was able to keep them from being nuked by GOG. It works but I shouldn't have had to do it this way - at ALL.

In short, I used Microsoft's Process Monitor utility (part of the SysInternals Suite) to get the filename it was trying to load but couldn't. After getting .webp versions of the images, and properly naming them, I had to set two (and ONLY two) security entries on each .webp after I placed it in the correct webcache subfolder: set Everyone-Delete to Deny, and Everyone-Read to Allow. And now it works as expected. Still, sounds like this has been a problem for years. I shouldn't have had to spend hours on a dirty hack because GOG keeps nuking custom images for a reason I cannot fathom.

Do you think you could provide a more detailed explanation on how you solved it? I have found the webcache folder for a game that has this problem and I tried checking the GOG Galaxy processes/threads/keys with Microsoft's Process Monitor but I couldn't find anything...
Hi!

Maybe I finally have a solution to your problem: RepairGOG-GalaxyImages
I was facing the same problem and because no answer I found worked (clearing the webcache folder, re-installing GOG Galaxy,...) I did some research and programming and came up with this little tool.

You find the download here: RepairGOG-GalaxyImages

Happy gaming!

I'm sorry but I have no clue what this error exactly means. It seems CURL (a standard tool used to make server requests) has some security issues. Maybe you are using a very secured firewall or your antivirus software is interfering with the script?
