The classic example here is when a printer stops working (i.e. it's lost its connection to the network). Fuj ... I mean, our IT Support have to send an engineer in a week's time. The person who made the call sticks a piece of paper on the printer with a note stating, "Out of Order - Support Ticket Raised".

Sometime later in the day, I wander over to the printer to collect my documents, see the sign, switch the printer off, switch it back on again, print my documents ...

One of my own anecdotes:

"I can print from everything, except Microsoft Office."
"Is there paper in the printer?"

Another classis was the guy who ran out of space on his desk, so continued the dragging the mouse up his body ...

Sorry, this is the first I'm hearing about it. Actually, that's not true. You had mentioned in another thread that you were working on a downloader. I just didn't know it would be ready so soon. Does it check for updates yet?

Will you be releasing native versions in the future, or will it always require Perl?

This isn't the version I was (am) working on when I mentioned it in the other thread. This is "stop-gap" version just to help those who have bad connections and stuff. This one doesn't check for updates or anything, it just downloads the files you put/uncomment in the queue without any intervention.

I am going to try to bundle it all together so it is just download-install-run once I get to a reasonable state - but yes, it will most likely still be written in Perl.

I hate tech support reps for the most part with A PASSION. One time I had to replace my monitor because it wasn't displaying brightly anymore and the image was a bit distorted. I tried adjusting it in the monitor controls and through software on the pc and nothing worked.....yes I called the company that makes the monitor to get help or arrange to ship it in for a replacement, and the damn woman(even after hearing my prior attempts at fixing it) tells me it's the PC's fault and that I should try it on another system when it was CLEARLY an issue with their monitors. After repeatedly telling her it wasn't my PC's fault and that I wouldn't and couldn't try it with another PC she refused to help me out any further so I just gave up and chucked the old one for a new LCD.

I wish. If I was in control of the computer security, we might actually have some.

Recently, one of my colleagues rang up IT because a "strange application" came up asking to defrag the HDD. The helpdesk person she got told her to accept it, despite it not having the name of "authorised software" and a one minute google search would have indicated it was malware.

We have a firewall which prompts Allow/Deny for things you must have access to. Follow the "IT would have preconfigured this since only they can install software, deny everything" thought and you will block something you need to do your job. IT tell everyone to Just accept everything. I presume its so if someone does introduce a virus/trojan across the network, they can blame them for accepting it.

Yes to all.......sounds like a good, clear headed strategy. I mean, just look how good it's been handled with the bailou....err nvm.

I'm using it at this moment, though I downloaded the script not much more than an hour ago. I'll probably be using it once in a while to make sure I have the latest version of everything.
