StingingVelvet: Repeating hub areas - I know DX did it, but still, I think we should be passed that by now.

The 3rd person stuff bothered me not even a little bit.
Surely you've played highly atmospheric FPS titles such as Amnesia or Metroid Prime? If you have then you understand why those games would have completely failed as 3rd person titles? If the kiddies really want it, give them the OPTION to use 3rd person, but leave the rest of us alone. We just want a great FPS experience.

As for the hub worlds, I think slightly open linear sections are better than an open world approach you seem to be rooting for. Playing games like Skyrim and GTA, I've come to realize that bigger does not mean better. Making the worlds smaller gives them more time to polish things up and add a lot more detail. Volume is a poor substitute for quality.

StingingVelvet: Only things that really bothered me were:

Boss battles - Just no.

Vents everywhere - be more creative with alternate paths.

Repeating hub areas - I know DX did it, but still, I think we should be passed that by now.

I fully agree with this post. My biggest beef with the game are the boss battles, which just didn't sit well with in the game. I really liked how it was handled in the Missing Link though.

The original Deus Ex had non-liniar hub sections, and people didn't seem to mind. I for one like Skyrim (and TES in genera) quite a bit, so I guess there's the point of disagreement :-P
The third person perspective and melee kills actually didn't bother me in the least.
I also didn't notice the vents that much either, but now that I know it's a problem, I'm sure I'll notice them everywhere.
I won't say the game is perfect, but I really liked it a lot overall and actually prefer it over the original.

That said, I completely agree with the boss battles.
I was playing a fairly combative character, I got my shit all kinds of slapped once I made it to the first boss.
Having some alternate way to kill/avoid them would have made a lot of the encounters better.
To me Human Revolution is a terrible game, weak both technically and gameplay wise. I'm surprised noone mention the automatic health regeneration that eliminates big part of strategy there could have been and was in the original.

Another problem that I had and that hasn't been stressed in this thread is the crates - every room and corridor is filled with crates to use them as cover - it looks stupid and terrible and unaesthetic.

But I knew about most of this game's problems long before it came out so.

Oooh, and the removal of localized damage with crippling effects upon player character. That was an amazing aspect of the original, needlessly removed for HR.
I just got it and not too far into it, but...

I like the view switch when in cover. And I do wish there was an option to scroll out to 3rd person if I'm just walking around and not fighting.

The orange is a bit icky; would have been nice to have the option to change the display to the more stereotypical blue or green, or even red.

I haven't used insta-kill much (I prefer blowing their heads off), but I can see how that could get annoyingly repetitive after a while.

I don't have a problem with automatic health regeneration, though, given all the other stuff that is being done to bodies in the setting. If you want to talk far-fetched, how about being able to put him back together after the "prologue"? So I just take it for granted that monitoring a body's health and giving it a boost fits in this scenario.

Vents: I remember thinking, Hey, there are actually filters in here!
My main complaints come down to boss battles and the ending machine.

Seriously, don't outsource some of the most notable parts of your game to a dev studio no one has ever heard of before and will never hear of again, particularly if their head is a confessed "shooter guy" who's apparently never even heard of deus ex (yeah, some shooter guy he is...)

As for the ending, if you're going to make it so the only choice that matters to the ending happens at the ending, at least try to make it a little less blatant than a literal ending vending machine.

Aside from that, there's a few niggling things, but they didn't affect me enough to really notice them.
i think the whole choose your weapon thing at the beggning was pretty cool, i wish they had implemented more of that into the game.

another thing, i just may be really horrible at the game or something, i dunno, but i died a lot. the only other game that i die that much during was dark souls. seems like every 2 minutes i had to load my game. and i had it on the easiest difficulty. and i havn't even gotten to a boss battle yet!

Well to be fair Deus Ex was a pretty lousy shooter.

It's still somewhat required you atleast KNOW of it if you consider yourself a 'shooter guy'

I pretty damned certain his definition of being a shooter guy is "i played Halo once!" especially considering how dull and basic the boss battles were, even for generic shooters.

Immersion is probably my favorite thing about video games. Briefly going into third-person for some actions does not ruin my immersion.

Well it does ruin mine :-P I hated it in Skyrim, I hate it even more in HR. How hard is it to make an optional choice for the player to just play the entire thing in 3rd person!? I would prefer 1st, but that would be way harder to do.

It is extremely hard if you want the levels and game mechanics to be balanced.
3rd person doesn't bother me. i played red faction armegeddon a while back, and found it to be quiet the awsome game. techincally i think its in second person, i realize that, but it was not your traditional first person shooter, like HR, and it wasn't bothersom to me at all.

however, skyrim in 3rd person bothers me. probably becuase you weild a sword, but for other reasons too. fallout as well, all the TES games included. although i can't remember if you can use third person on the earlier ones or not.
