An Indy platformer.

Spelunky, an addictive, highly-polished roguelike platformer full of arcade challenge, high adventure in randomly generated stages, and heaps of ancient treasures gleaming in the dark, is available 10% off on GOG.com. That's only $13.49 for the first week!

EXTRA! Don't miss our Website Spelunking Challenge! Find golden idols on GOG.com and win one of the cute Spelunky Minis!

A hat, a whip, an attitude, and hunger for adventure--that's all it takes to start your amazing journey into the ominous depths of the ancient temple. The legend has it, that the place holds--among its many secrets--the ultimate treasure of a lost civilization. Beware, though: the underground is swarming with strange monsters and it's full of traps that will end your adventure in the goriest, bloodiest possible ways. There's magic in these caverns and walls, though, that twists time and space. You'll be doomed to repeat your attempts at braving the trap-filled rooms again, and again--and each time they will look different. Such is the amazing power of this place. Will you dare to explore it?

Spelunky is a platformer that challenges you to beat a series of proceduraly-generated stages. Easy as it may seem at first, the task proves to be extremely challenging. Every step you take without dying is a success, and the exit seems to elude you in every level. Trying to grab as many riches on the way, rescue a girl or a boy trapped somewhere near, and make it to the end of the stage in a given time takes more than a little practice. With sleek 2D graphics, great gameplay diversity provided by many power-ups and special locations, and difficulty level that gets really extreme at times, this game will keep you entertained for many, many hours.

If you're the type of person who likes to laugh danger in the face, perform daring rescues, explore ancient ruins, and hunt for unimaginable riches, take on the life of a archaeologist/adventurer in Spelunky, for only $13.49! The 10% off discount offer will last until Thursday, August 15, at 9:59AM GMT.
Eurogamer just gave Spelunky a 10/10 and called it 'the perfect game'.

Sabin_Stargem: You can choose between using a keyboard and a controller, and reconfigure their button settings. However, I believe that only Xbox 360 controllers can be used as the gamepad, as I recall several modern PC games only recognizing that one.
To be more precise: you must have a XInput gamepad, not the older DirectInput gamepads (mimicking basically PS2 gamepad look and feel).

There are other XInput gamepads besides just the official XBox360 gamepads. For example the Logitech F310/F510/F710 gamepads. I've yet to see a new PC game supporting XBox360 gamepads that wouldn't work perfectly with e.g. Logitech F310 (this includes e.g. Darksiders, which was claimed here not to support anything else but the official XBox360 gamepad).

In fact I think even Windows itself was at some point fooled into thinking F310 is the official XBox360 gamepad from MS, as it wanted to download XBox360 drivers for it (maybe they had worked with it, I don't know; I just use the F310 on all my Win7/Win8 PCs without installing any extra drivers).

And the Logitech gamepads also fully support older DirectInput games, you can switch the D <=> X mode with a switch on the controller. Works great for older DirectInput games too, without extra software.

The cheapo no-name gamepads that many stores still sell (especially in countries like Thailand etc.) seem to be still the older DirectInput variants, so careful with them. I have no idea why they still keep selling, and manufacturing, DirectInput-only gamepads for PCs.

I think these older cheapo DirectInput gamepads are the reason people still believe that only the official XBox360 gamepads are compatible with new XInput games.

keeveek: Another week without classic release, huh? So much for "at least one classic a week, we promisssss!"

But I guess what GOG really needs is 2d indie platformers that will hit Humble Bundle in less than a month.
avatar
Fred_DM: funny this got downrated even though it's completely true.

and who in their right mind buys indies outside of bundles anymore? i'd feel stupid paying $13 for a game you'll be able to purchase for as little as $1 after a few months or even weeks.
Well, guess I'm not in my 'right mind' but I buy most indies out of bundles as not only do I review them for my website, so need to do that close to release and not six months later, I also prefer having them all in one place rather than scattered over 10 different sites.

Many of us do, IMO.

Interesting, especially if it is not written by some Spelunky (classic) fan.

I am not sure if I have played the original Spelunky (freeware?)... so does it give a good feel how the remake feels like to play, and what it is that makes it a 10/10 game? I didn't really expect a mere indie oldie-looking platform game to get glowing 10/10 reviews like that.

PaterAlf: And I'd feel like a cheapskate if I would pay less than $1 for a game that gives me dozens of hours of fun.
Couldn't have said it better.

People bitch about "all games being mega AAA games that cost 60 bucks and are crap" or go on about "nothing ever unique being made", then won't pay a fair price for an indie game.

I don't get it, and I don't understand how they expect indie gamers to be able to make the games they do, if they won't even buy their games for more than a couple of dollars six months after release. Cheapskate doesn't even begin to describe it.

And, as I've said before, and GOG has obviously intimated over the last couple of years, long-term GOG would simply NOT survive if they weren't selling indies as well as classics. There aren't enough classics that they can get to keep the site afloat long term, IMO, AND with classic gamers being a relatively finite bunch, when we all own the classic games we want, then how does GOG survive?

The bitching about indies gets OLD. It's juvenile, it's self-centered and me me me, and it shows a clear lack of understanding about how a website operates and how much money a business like GOG needs to survive.

Don't like indies, then don't buy them. But for Fucks sake - SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT IT -- most of us are sick of hearing it.

Bloodygoodgames: Very happy about this coming to GOG. Played the original and loved it, so really looking forward to the update.

Will have to wait a few weeks, though, as a) broke and b) I just can't handle having one more game in the massive backlog :)
Why wait check your PM.

It's interesting to me because they gave the Xbox Spelunky 10/10 last year, which often means any updated or different platform version isn't going to get anywhere near that. That's what leads me to believe it's an even better game than the freeware original on PC, as Eurogamer are often tough to please.

I did play the original freeware version and it's bloody fabulous, but never did finish it -- died one too many times :)

OMG, I think I love you :) (Don't worry -- I'm a girl -- well, unless you're a girl too or a gay guy and then you might be worried :)

That's the SECOND superbly fabulous indie game you've bought me in as many months. (I'm still playing Don't Starve several times a week, still loving it and still getting my ass periodically kicked :)

Thank you soooo much. You have no idea how broke I am this month. Pay day is next week and I have a fridge full of food and 97 baht -- in dollars, that's about $3.26 :)

You're a total stud!!!!

Off to download and try!!!

It will probably begin "Well, I've just died the 333rd horrible death -- this time the piranhas got me" :)

The original game is incredibly difficult (at least it was for me) but it's so addictive you just keep going back. Which does say a lot for how fun the game is, as I usually have ZERO tolerance for dying a lot.. So I can't wait to give the new one a try.

it's the same thing with Don't Starve -- I think I've died over 100 times in that game, but I go back again and again and again, and start right from Day One chopping wood and gathering berries.

Don't know what it is about it, as any other game I'd have thrown my laptop out of the window by now. :)

G-Doc: And lastly, to address the matter of our classic releases: The Enigmatic T will be making an announcement soon. He's got some good news :-)
"Soon" as in "later today" or as in "a couple of weeks"?
