An Indy platformer.

Spelunky, an addictive, highly-polished roguelike platformer full of arcade challenge, high adventure in randomly generated stages, and heaps of ancient treasures gleaming in the dark, is available 10% off on GOG.com. That's only $13.49 for the first week!

EXTRA! Don't miss our Website Spelunking Challenge! Find golden idols on GOG.com and win one of the cute Spelunky Minis!

A hat, a whip, an attitude, and hunger for adventure--that's all it takes to start your amazing journey into the ominous depths of the ancient temple. The legend has it, that the place holds--among its many secrets--the ultimate treasure of a lost civilization. Beware, though: the underground is swarming with strange monsters and it's full of traps that will end your adventure in the goriest, bloodiest possible ways. There's magic in these caverns and walls, though, that twists time and space. You'll be doomed to repeat your attempts at braving the trap-filled rooms again, and again--and each time they will look different. Such is the amazing power of this place. Will you dare to explore it?

Spelunky is a platformer that challenges you to beat a series of proceduraly-generated stages. Easy as it may seem at first, the task proves to be extremely challenging. Every step you take without dying is a success, and the exit seems to elude you in every level. Trying to grab as many riches on the way, rescue a girl or a boy trapped somewhere near, and make it to the end of the stage in a given time takes more than a little practice. With sleek 2D graphics, great gameplay diversity provided by many power-ups and special locations, and difficulty level that gets really extreme at times, this game will keep you entertained for many, many hours.

If you're the type of person who likes to laugh danger in the face, perform daring rescues, explore ancient ruins, and hunt for unimaginable riches, take on the life of a archaeologist/adventurer in Spelunky, for only $13.49! The 10% off discount offer will last until Thursday, August 15, at 9:59AM GMT.

timppu: Didn't you just wonder why anyone would look forward to GOG releases, as even the oldies can be obtained for free from "abandonware" sites, even with installers?
That argument makes no sense. Every game can be obtained for free. People don't buy products or services because they can't obtain them for free, but for variety of reasons.

I buy on GOG because I CAN. ;-)

edit: and of course I use abandonia and similar sites for the games I'd like to play but are not sold anywhere. (Where is Legend of Kyrandia trilogy?!)

I have on my HD most of the old games I like, many of the downloaded from abandonware sites. But whenever one of them is released on GOG, I purchase it and delete my copy.

G-Doc: ...aaaand, we do have an interesting Spelunky challenge in store for you. :-) It'll be announced soon.

Mirkat: I would like to know if the controls in the PC version is fully customizable?

And I also feel that with Steam having the Daily Challenge mode can visibly impact sales of the GoG version. Having free OST is nice, but having another Game Mode means the game lifespan is improved. It will be interesting to see what kind of counter GoG comes up with to address this.
You can choose between using a keyboard and a controller, and reconfigure their button settings. However, I believe that only Xbox 360 controllers can be used as the gamepad, as I recall several modern PC games only recognizing that one.
So why are the Steam and GOG versions different?

There is list of the main differences between the various versions here:

keeveek: Another week without classic release, huh?
Another? Last two weeks had classic releases.

Immoli: Another? Last two weeks had classic releases.
Oh, Jack Keane is a classic now?

Ok, so every game that hasn't premiered today is a classic.

Release date is 2007 and GOG was selling games from 2007 before they started selling newer titles. They seemed to be considered classics before, why not now?

As the the second part, not every game that hasn't premiered today was released from 2007 or earlier. It would be more like every game that has came out before 2008 is a classic.

Yeah, if we keep on watering down the meaning of the word classic, we will never see many of the older games people are begging for years to be released. Because why bother? There is a nice lineup of indies that requirealmost no work by GOG to release them.

You may even say Larry: Magna cum laude is a classic, but by my definition, it's just a shitty old game. The last classic released by my book is Tzar: burden of the crown (and thanks for that magnificent release!)

It's because devs are being lazy, I doubt it's the case here. You were able to play the classic version with any gamepad you liked, so I don't see a reason why the new game would limit players in that regard.

Fred_DM: doesn't mean i'm going to friggin' pirate them like that idiot Zoidberg suggested. I've never pirated a game in my life.
In my eyes, you're not much better than a pirate who gets all his games free while you're being a self-righteous prick because you throw a dollar for 5-6-7 or 8 games that are worth way more.
avatar
Fred_DM: get off your high horse for a change, will you? I joined GOG because of good OLD games. doesn't take a rocket scientist to recognize that GOG has departed from that path.

"Abandon ware" doesn't exist, it is just piracy. Not taken care of by their editors but there isn't any law allowing it.

So it's more about them releasing games that don't suit you?
HELP GOG!

What's the max length on user reviews? I tried to post a review that was over 1000 words, but the error message just says "Your review is too long, please make it shorter :)" - that doesn't help much at all!

keeveek: Another week without classic release, huh? So much for "at least one classic a week, we promisssss!"

But I guess what GOG really needs is 2d indie platformers that will hit Humble Bundle in less than a month.
Did they actually use the word 'promise?'

Not trying to be snarky or get into a debate, just curious.
