Divine Divinity for free and even more reasons to pre-order the upcoming innovative fantasy RTS!

[url=http://www.gog.com/gamecard/divinity_dragon_commander]Divinity: Dragon Commander is an upcoming multi-layered real-time strategy game with a fantastic setting, epic scale, and many original ideas making it a breath of fresh air in the genre, and it's currently available for pre-orders on GOG.com, for $39.99. The game's release is currently planned for August 6, and if you pre-ordered it, plan to pre-order it, or are generally interested in great RTS games, we've got some important news for you!

Larian Studios, the game's creators, announced there will be two editions of the game available at the release. The version you'll be getting if you pre-order on GOG.com before August 6 now becomes the extended Imperial Edition, which contains the game's additional launch content: a development documentary video, an extra campaign map, an additional golden skin for your Dragon Emperor, and the game's soundtrack. The pre-order period is your chance to grab the game and all of the additional content for just $39.99.

If you decide not to take the pre-order route and get the game after the release for $39.99, you'll still be able to upgrade your version with the aforementioned development documentary video, extra map, golden dragon skin, and game soundtrack via the additional $9.99 "Imperial Edition Upgrade". Yes, this basically means that early adopters receive $9.99 worth of content with their pre-ordered copy, free of charge, thus becoming the owners of the most robust version of the game available on launch day.

The other thing Larian Studios is offering to GOG.com pre-ordering customers is a complimentary free copy of their classic Divine Divinity action-RPG. This will be a GOG.com copy, mind you, so the free game itself also comes with tons of valueble bonus content (and don't forget about the first free game you got out of this deal: Master of Magic!). This gift from Larian is meant to make up for the fact, that due to technical reasons the developer can't offer early beta access to GOG.com buyers.

Bottom line: Pre-order Divinity: Dragon Commander on GOG.com for $39.99 before August 6, to get the exclusive Imperial Edition of the game + free Divine Divinity & Master of Magic!

Now, just to keep things transparent, a post-bottom line. This announcement might made some of our veteran users raise their eyebrows once or twice, and we feel it is important to address the fact that we're taking a new route with this release. First of all, this is the first time on GOG.com that a single game will be simultanously available in two different versions, one of them standard and the other one with addtional content. We believe this gives more freedom of choice to our users, and increasingly, this is where a lot of newer titles are going: selling additional content like soundtracks and so on at a premium. It's important to note that GOG won't be doing this with our classic releases, as the GOG.com policy for those always has been and will be to make every release as complete, comprehensive, and filled with free bonus content as possible. For new titles we would like to offer both the gamers and the developer more flexibility to make their mutual deals the way they want to. Furthermore, as time progresses and new releases become a de facto part of our back-catalog, we'll be trying to re-negotiate our deals to include soundtracks and more bonus content with those as well.

We hope this answers most of your questions regarding the new solutions we're testing here. Our recent user survey allows us to remain optimistic about your feedback. If you have any questions regarding these new steps we're taking or the (highly recommended!) Divinity: Dragon Commander pre-order offer, we encourage you to ask them in the forums.

zlep: Assuming you regard $9.99 as a "smaller upgrade fee"...
well it IS smaller than $39.99 :P

Silen: I think GOG should offer an alternative for those who already own one or both games.
There are always people who think GOG should offer alternatives for freebies and bonus games. It has happened (and even then, people weren't content), but don't count on it, especially because it's not GOG offering these, but Larian (through GOG).

Trade the codes with someone who does not yet have the games in question.

Are they going to be separate codes, or just a single thing with all three games, like GOG usually does? I don't want different freebies, but I'd love to be able to give them to someone else and since I have one but not the other... there would be a bit of a problem with redeeming a singular code.

To the GoG team : Would it be possible to get Beyond Divinity instead of Divine Divinity, which I already own ? And I've got Master of Magic too, so it doesn't encourage me to preorder :p

zlep: I think it's more that they're creating the extra stuff as bonuses for their Kickstarter backers, and don't want pre-orderers on GOG to feel they were gipped. (Witness the understandable outrage re: Botanicula pre-orders and the launch day bundle).

That part I'm completely happy about. The idea of standard and "better" releases on GOG is something I'm rather uncomfortable about, but for the moment I'll just trust that they'll do it in an acceptable way. I'm really looking forward to Dragon Commander, so I don't want to see it replacing Omerta as the posterboy for "mistakes made while experimenting".
Well, I'm a backer of theirs on kickstarter, as I decided to "preorder" with my backing there instead of on GOG. And apparently I'm getting the premium version, too, so only "advantages" on GOG would be the 2 free games.

On the matter of standard and better I'm pretty torn myself, specially because it's not standard and a cheaper "no extra" but a weaker release at the same price and what used to be standard at a higher price point. But it's not on a level I'll call bullshit and whiiiiine. At least, not yet. But I'm watching!
So will both versions be available at the release or is this just pre-order only?
I've got mixed feelings on this one. Dragon Commander is one hell of an ambitious project, with the campaign map, RTS battles including land, sea and air on the same field, and the ability to directly involve yourself in those battles as a dragon. All of these elements exist in other games, but I can't think of anyone who's attempted to combine them. Add the fact that they chose to release a new project DRM-free, and I find myself wanting to see Larian make a profit on this, if for no other reason than to encourage other developers to release new projects to GOG as well.

All that being said, I'm not a fan of the mixed editions thing, even if mine is being auto-upgraded. I understand the studio needs to make a profit on their game, and that in some ways, this is meant to be supportive to their kickstarter backers(bit of a slap in the face to someone who donated in the tiers that provide this bonus content if we just get the same content for free right away). On the other hand, I'd almost prefer it if they held this back a few years (thus increasing the reward's value to the backers). Then negotiated it as a free update with GOG (supporting the community and sales models here).

My suggestion: if you really want this extra content right away, pre-order. If you're tempted by the game, but want to wait for the reviews, then buy the standard edition(if the reviews justify it) and wait for GOG's promised renegotiation. I've got enough faith in GOG to believe they'll eventually get the content in one bundle according to the standards we're used to

Any games you already own stay on the code and can then be given to someone else for them to redeem.

Not sure if that's what you were referring to but if you wanted to give the game you already owned away there shouldn't be a problem with that assuming these gift codes work as usual.
This effectively means Larian has cut out content, that's already done for the game's launch to sell as day-one DLC or a preorder bonus for people who don't mind gambling away 40$. Well done, Larian.

Roman5: I know all of this depends entirely on Larian so here's a message to them:

Dear Larian studios, this is a dirty move where you sell things which should be originally in the game to begin with for an additional price and try to make it look like a "Premium" edition, many studios and publishers do the same shit on Steam and other places

What all of this does is decrease the value of your game, decrease your reputation and provokes less people to preorder your game because based on what you are doing: you are trying to Swindle and Rob people with "Day 1 DLC" aka: Stuff that should already be in the game for free - a practice popular among many terrible and greedy publishers

Because of this attitude, I will not be pre-ordering your game

Quoting in agreement. Even though I Kickstarted your game, I do *not* appreciate you taking this approach. It makes you slimey. I don't like that I'm already in a business relationship a company that would so something so wrong and anti-consumer.

I own Divine Divinity, not the other one, but I'd like to give both of them to someone who'd appreciate them rather than redeem Master of Magic myself. I assumed it would work in the way you describe since that has been my experience with GOG gift codes.

I think it works something like this. You redeem your own code first, which adds "Divinity: Dragon Commander" to your account. Then, pass on the same code to someone who doesn't own "Divine Divinity 1", the game will be added to his/her account and so forth.

However, in your case, you'd have to find someone who already owns "Divinity: Dragon Commander" and "Divine Divinity 1" first, but wants Master of Magic.

Why wouldn't you redeem Master of Magic yourself ?

Maybe he sucks at strategy games, like I do too?! :D
But I think I'll still pre-order Dragon Commander, I at least liked the RPG elements I saw and I guess I can play it on a lower difficulty or something.

Guys are you for real ? Stuff that should be already in game IS A COSMETIC future - you get a golden dragon skin wow. You do realize there is a golden and silver jet packs also that are promotional items for 2 different promotions ? Is that content that should be in game and never ever make any promotion ? The other so called game future - Earth map for campaign ? From my understanding that might replace the standard map you're playing on with Earth looking one. All the rest of the futures are pure bonus that cost them money - It's documentary of making the game and Kiril's OST. So you're all rioting when they offer you that as potential bonuses after game launches and calling them slimey due to offering you Collectors Edition soundtrack and documentary after release ? So really can you point out what is the cut content that should be in game that is making you going on crusade against Larian ? Oh yea lets not forget also they are really greedy bastards - they are offering you Divine Divinity for free because they can't sort a GoG server for beta test and they want to be fair with all their customers. Yep I agree Larian are next EA with day one DLC. Lets burn them !
