A point-and-click fix for your brain.

Gray Matter, a glorious comeback to the classic adventure game genre for Gabriel Knight's co-creator Jane Jensen, is available 75% off on GOG.com. That's only $2.49 for the next 24 hours!

Gray Matter tells the story of Samantha Everett, a young female illusionist searching for her lucky break on a road-trip through Europe. When mechanical failure brings her to a halt in the middle of nowhere, she crosses paths with the mysterious and troubled neuro-biologist Professor David Styles. He quickly draws Sam into his world of the inexplicable and the terrifying, where scientific research dabbles in the supernatural.

The game is a classical point and click adventure by all accounts. You’ll explore the authentic, beautifully hand drawn streets and interiors of modern London and Oxford, accompanied by an elegant, haunting soundtrack. See through the eyes of Sam and Professor Styles as your progress through challenging puzzles that will never have you reaching for a walkthrough. Sam’s unique skill set as a magician introduces an original twist on the gameplay as well, allowing you to carefully plan, then execute your illusions and get precisely what you need... out of anyone.

Beat the masterfully crafted puzzles and enjoy the deftly constructed narrative courtesy of Jane Jensen in Gray Matter, for only $2.49 on GOG.com. The 75% off discount lasts until Thursday, October 23, at 9:59AM GMT.

snowkatt: glad to see it back
What do you mean, back? Was removed from gog some time ago?

hucklebarry: I'm just now playing through this. Its a ton of fun, but know that you can break your game fairly easily... luckily there are helpful game saves to fix you up.
Frustrating that it hasn't been fixed, but its a very, very good adventure game so far (about 80% of the way through now).
Highly recommended.

phaolo: Wow, how long does it last in total?
How are puzzles, story and ending?
It's really a shame that the dev didn't fix it..
Puzzles and story are pretty good for an adventure game. I haven't come across any ridiculous ones yet (that have no logic behind them). The story is engaging and the music is very atmospheric. The magic trick system is very gimmicky, but it doesn't ruin the game.

I can't speak to the ending yet, still working on it. I'm on the next to last chapter and have logged 17 hours (however, I believe that is counting tabbed out time. I would guestimate that I'm more around 6 - 10 hours so far of actual play time with around 2 hours left to play).

For this sale price my recommendation is for any and ALL adventure game fans to try this one out. Only avoid if you really don't like the point and click format.

6 to 8 hours long on total, very easy (way too easy as far as I'm concerned), the final chapter being maybe a bit less obvious than the rest of the game. Story/setting is rather nice, keeps you interested throughout at least. Ending is a letdown - but then again, apart from Isles Of Terra, what ending isn't ?

Shame that the whole "magic trick" minigame sucks, wasted potential.

I don't know what hucklebarry means by "break your game", I experienced nothing of the sort.

If it was, I didn't notice. It's only been on GOG for 4 months.

It's not on the removed games list on the GOGwiki either. {shrug}

It is a very good game and a different one from many modern adventures. It does not insult your intelligence with its story, and the story is very well paced (except for the part near the end which is unfortunately rushed).
For $2.50 it is a steal. Do not steal but better buy the game!

I meant that you can easily have your game break. Luckily, lots of other folks experienced the same broken game and shared saves (as I mentioned) to keep the game moving.

I still don't understand. Do you mean that the game crashes to desktop or that some bug(s) can cause you to be blocked from progressing further ?
Anyway, I must be lucky since I saw neither happening.

You were lucky. It has to do with the order in which you do things. If you follow a walkthrough and do everything exactly the way that the devs thought it through, you won't have any problems. If you don't follow a walk through, and do something they didn't plan (but still allowed), then you will need someones else's save game to get you past that point.

OK, I see. Lucky indeed, since I never use walkthroughs... I encountered something of the sort when I played through A New Beginning a couple years back.

I'd say for that price it's worth it for an afternoon's entertainment when your point&click slate is empty or you feel lazy, but don't expect any lifelasting memories to stick. Sins Of The Fathers or King's Quest 6 this is not.

Fantastic promo. Bought it!
I already own it as well, and played it a while back. It really is a great game, I at least had a lot of fun with it :)
I never had any problems with dead ends or anything of the sort, although I did get stuck quite badly at one point for a stupid reason.

Btw, apparently somebody made some savegames available in the gog forum, might be helpful for people who run into problems

rtcvb32: since it's a point&click, I've discovered I don't enjoy those games...
avatar
deonast: What don't enjoy point and click. Well each to not their "own" I guess :)
After several games of point and clicks (Back to the future, Blackwell Bundle, some Deponia, some Beneath a steel sky), I've found out that the logic they followed in order to make it from point A to point B isn't always the same way they planned it. Sometimes they are too subtle, and sometimes they are just flat out confusing. Eventually it ends up as a big 'click everything with everything' and that's never fun. At least BTTF had a hint system that you could go to if you were having trouble instead of searching for an FAQ to tell you 'oh yeah you need to do THIS before THIS'... which isn't always obvious unless you explore every single conversation tree too...

Actually a lot of the annoyances were from the Blackwell games, the last in the bundle of games. Some of the elements were infuriating, and probably wouldn't have been had I not slept in the middle of the game (certain things weren't fresh in my mind), like the glow in the dark business cards... And having to get a conversation with every perfect answer (like 7 of them) before it moves on. This included the ending dialog where you had to choose all the worst a**hole answers or start completely over..
lol, just bought it for 2 bucks....

strange adventure.... different and very complicated, got stuck already.... :D

ah well for 2 bucks :D cant do much wrong
