I would love to have visual novels on here.

Normally I would buy used copies online of them but hardly any actually get localized and even fewer are readily available for purchase.

A digital hub like GOG would allow VNs to have a home to western audiences who really want to legitimately buy them, instead of pirating them cus they have no other option and need to have them translated.

There are a fair number of visual novels that sound really interesting and I would love to play, but acquiring a legal copy is so difficult I'd rather not spend the time and effort trying to do that for the few titles I could get a hold of. Along with that older VNs that did get localized may have compatibility issues with an OS like Vista or Windows 7, so having them on GOG would help out a lot with getting the games to work as well.

Some VNs I hear so many good things about (especially the stories and plot) but then I wonder how I could get a hold of the game, and then I realize I'd probably have to pirate/torrent the game then find a translation patch for it and hope it works with Windows 7. I don't want to have to resort to that. I want to support GOG and support VNs (and those who created them).

The only thing I'd ask of GOG is to not censor or edit the games in any way from their original form. Translation is one thing, censorship is another and its stupid when there's a rating system in place, along with the fact a majority of GOG users are old enough to not really care about adult content itself being present in a game. I say this because of the "no children" issue of Fallout and Fallout 2 that need to be solved with unofficial patches. I'm not sure what the laws in Poland are, but I wouldn't want them to effect whether or not VNs could be released here, or at least being able to release here without being butchered.
I wonder if Analogue : A Hate Story will ever come out on GOG.
I have no interest in purchasing these types of games. But, that's not to say that others don't, so if GOG thinks it is worthwhile, then by all means go right ahead!

For all of those who mentioned that they have no interest in buying these kinds of games, and to those who really enjoy these types of games, please check this one out as if we can get it on GOG.com it will be one of the kinds of visual novels (kinetic) to showcase the genre - plus, it'll be 100% free if all goes well!

Let's see some more visual novels from Japan make there way to Steam and GOG.com!

I wouldn't really mind, though I'd prefer having hidden object adventures here first.
After Long Live The Queen fiasco, I am not sure. It appears half of the community thinks anime = porn, so that could end catastrophically.
You mean those weird Asian comics in a somewhat interactive game form? Yeah, I don't even know what those are really. I always thought they were some kind of perv thing with anime babes. I guess there's more to them?

That was mostly due to the extremely unfortunate screenshots on the game page.

To judge from the general discussions on the forum, it seems there are a lot of fans of visual novels and Japanese games in general here. The problem is that those games act as a great divider. Most genres are for most people a question of "like them/don't care about them", while Japanese games seem to be more of a "absolutely love them/detest them with every fiber in my body" thing.

Personally, while I do really hate most Japanese games (mind you, I have nothing against Japanese people), I have no problem with them coming to GOG. Just because I don't like them, it doesn't mean that nobody else should be allowed to buy and enjoy them. However, there do seem to be a number of people who are vehemently opposed to the inclusion of anything they don't personally like in the GOG catalog. I don't see why their opinion should matter though.

long live the queen is a VN? It's clearly a kind of RPG, with C&C, even if the consequences are opaque. I'm pretty surprised that Academagia isn't here or on steam yet, actually.
As always, I will advocate GOG accepting visual novels into the catalog. I feel that visual novels are similar to JRPGs, with one major alteration: Removing the battle mechanics in favor of improving the story, characters, and atmosphere.

For people who are unfamiliar with the genre, I would recommend trying the Ace Attorney series, starting with the first case. That should be sufficient for determining if you enjoy the concept of the genre.

There are more to them you know. Don't judge a book by its cover. It's like saying that all Asians are Chinese or All Americans are rednecks. You don't want your country or race to be stereotyped right? Ignorance gave birth to hate and racism.
I think the main issue is quality-control, the OP mentioned Ever 17 as an example of VN's that have decent writing, interesting characters and plot, but in reality games like Ever are extremely rare, I mean if you want a VN without hentai and with good enough quality story and production values to be sold I think Ever 17 is pretty much it. I'm not saying that there's not some good VN's out there that do have hentai, but face it there's no chance of GOG selling that stuff here. In Japan the genre is called eroge (erotic game) so there's not much way around it, there are some VN that were written by people who wanted to do a proper story but the only way they could get the VN into the market is by putting hentai in it (Fate-stay Night and Type-Moon stuff is a good example). The genre might have a few gems in it, but the vast majority is smut. And that stuff is only playable with fan-made translation patches.

Also most of the developers/publishers of that stuff probably don't even know anyone outside Japan even cares about that stuff, and would certainly wouldn't authorize or making the effort to license translations/localizations and online distribution.

Yep, it has been categorized as a Visual Novel.
I have to say though that the VN-quality of the game is mostly shown when you don't follow the most obvious story path.
For me it took three times getting crowned to really see that it is a Visual Novel. But then it was wonderful. Until then I had missed out on quite some bit by playing too cautiously.

...havent played the game nor followed any discussion about it. What sort of fiasco there's been?

You may read the news thread about the release.

A LOT of people were screaming "GOG released pedo-porn anime game!!!!!!" without even knowing what game it is.

I've played a lot of visual novels and many of them include romance. Some of them include sex scenes (not always with 18+ content). I can imagine the drama if one of those nutjobs found out there are teenagers having sex in a game.

I love visual novels. I'd buy some of them, but unfortunately, many of the great ones came with Japanese language only.
