It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Not excited, I moved to Linux Mint a couple of years ago & plan to never go back to Windows.
Hesitant and cautious, but I am thinking about upgrading.
I'm still trying to figure out if I can reserve (and obtain?) the free Windows 10, without actually installing it.

The thing is, I don't want to replace Windows 7 with 10 on my main laptop. At least not right now. But I'd like to have the option, OR even try again the multiboot thingie, like I earlier had Windows 7 and 8/8.1 running side by side on the same PC. So now I would run Windows 7 and 10 side by side, if possible. 7 for maybe more backwards compatibility, 10 mainly just to test it out.

So, anyone know? If I say "yes" to that small Windows icon that suggests I should get a free Windows 10, will it force me to upgrade to it, when the release date comes? Or can I install it myself later, even if I've re-installed Windows 7 on that PC?

I think with Windows 8 upgrade I got some kind of installer, which I could run myself to upgrade 7 => 8.

29 July. The Dual boot i think is the way to go because you can never know with Microsoft :)
It's concerning how much of a "walled garden" approach Microsoft is taking here. I'll also be waiting to see just how much of a difference DX12 makes. It's only benchmarking at this point...
I am eagerly anticipating. My HDD is in desperate need of a windows re install anyway, my registry is shot, but been hanging on for this and kill two birds with one stone.

Ok, but can I decide myself when to install it (even if I decide to reinstall Windows 7 first), or am I forced to upgrade on the release date? And if I refuse at that point, then no free Windows 10 anymore?

You have a year to install it, after that you have to pay.
windows 10 has forced auto-updates, meaning each time you turn on your own computer you never know what you will find
is that alright for you? for me no

So how about if I need to reinstall it after the year, or decide to go back to Windows 7 for now, and then three years later want to upgrade back to it?

If it means I have to install it within a year (and no re-installation from the scratch can be performed after that), I think I'll leave it. It will come preloaded on some future PC I buy at some point anyway, I'll use it then.

DeathDiciple: Nah, not switching windoze until first service pack, as usual. In a year or 2 when it becomes stable (both win and dx12) and has wider support of stuff actually using dx12 to matter.
What? Are you saying you weren't a fan of Windows Vista when it first came out? :P

Niggles: Not switching. Win 7 works fine. Dunno why they bother to keep making new ones.
Money, money, money.

The upgrade thing has appeared already. I can sense M$'s high pitched whine................it is ready to install a useless browser and candy crush.

More like killing one bird and shooting the other bird with this. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41wbaydSOmL._SY300_.jpg

Because that's an idiotic logic.

If we were to go with your logic, we all would have been staying with Windows 95 or even less. Just because it works.

Damnit some people.

Save your facepalm, it's not worth it to facepalm for a hopeless guy like him.
