amadren: That's what I was thinking about. Another abuse of power from an enormous company. But with the new hype over OpenGL, DirectX will soon not be used anymore by the devs I think
avatar
shmerl: Not soon, at least not until Windows / Xbox market share will diminish significantly. It can happen, but it will take time. Linux usage is growing, if slowly. And release of Steam Machines will boost it. And let's not forget that on mobile DX is non existent, and there Vulkan will be used practically everywhere pretty soon indeed.
You're surely right ^^

You make me laugh so hard with your dreams that will never become a reality.

The only thing real is probably Vulkan being used a lot on mobile phones since Android and iOS use OpenGL.

Your support of lock-in isn't even funny. So I won't laugh. History will teach you.

I've been hearing Linux is the future since 2000 or 2001 and that OpenGL is the future since 1999.

Go look at Steam's Hardware Survey Linux dropped from 0.88% to 0.87 in June 2015 and Linux keeps on dropping. In May 2015 Linux dropped 0.11%.

Windows 10 64-bit with Windows 10 32-bit is at 1.10% now.

On gog.com a few months ago mKango said Linux users was at 8% I wonder what % Linux users is on gog.com now.

Everyone at my work uses Windows and everyone at my work who plays video games plays video games on Windows at work.

All 70 people don't use Windows at all.

So what? How does it suddenly explain your support for lock-in? Lock-in is bad for developers and bad for users. The only ones to support it is the likes of MS who want to control the market and are scared of competition. So why do you do it then? Or are you on MS payroll?

And that means what exactly? That lock-in is somehow good for everyone? No, it's not.

Throwing around percentages without any absolute numbers....typical. The number of Linux users on Steam has increased, its just that with the likes of GTA5 and Witcher 3 releasing recently more Windows than normal logging on Steam lowering the overall % of Linux and OSX.

No I'm not on Microsoft's payroll, but in a way I am yes, because I own shares in Microsoft I own 10 shares. Other than Microsoft earning money selling copies of Windows, Xbox 360's, Xbox One's, Xbox Live subscriptions, Windows phones, and Windows tablets DirectX needs to be kept on Windows. I could care less if OpenGL, Mantle or Vulkan are used on Linux and Mac.

Not all lock-ins are bad. If your complaining about lock-ins you should also be complaining about video games being sold exclusively on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 (PS3), Xbox One, PlayStation 4 (PS4), and Nintendo's consoles. Fact is exclusivity sells.

Johnathanamz: Not all lock-ins are bad.
All of them are bad. Same way as monopolies are bad. They are an indication of a non-free market (as an opposite of free market). I.e. when competition is impeded with artificial means.

Lock-in hurts everyone save the few who do the locking....

Linux would be growing if it wasn't free. Windows and Mac grow because they are not free and most people prefer to purchase products that they want. When they see something free they get turned away thinking it's crap or free because not enough quality build was put into it. Only free loaders go for the free stuff like the people at my work who stock up like crazy on the free pens, papers, sticky papers, paper clips, and markers.

You live in the United States of America so you should know what working for a living and working hard to earn money to purchase something you want gets you and working hard to make a product to sell to get you a roof over your head and food on your table.

It is growing because it's free (as in free software - learn the difference between different meanings of free). It has nothing to do with what I said above. Free market means competition on merit. Monopoly / lock-in means no competition on merit. That's the usual MS tactics (to prevent competition on merit).

Since you like monopolies, I bet you like paying rip-off prices for poor quality products, right? Because that's exactly what monopolies end up like.

I'm pretty sure he's being paid to post those things. Whenever anybody criticizes Windows he pops up with some ludicrous astro-turfing hoping that nobody will notice. A lot of it isn't even remotely accurate.

I was not talking about the free market. I know what a free market is and what a monopoly is.

Free products suck. I don't ever want to touch them. It's why I don't grab free video games when gog.com offers them and it's why I do not participate in giveaways although someone purchases the video games. I would rather buy the video games myself.

You know that, but you obviously are anti-free market, since you support lock-in.

How exactly clueless are you? You have no idea, right? Free software displaced non free one in a huge amount of markets both industrial and consumer. You just didn't pay attention I guess, being so busy with lock-in justification.

Please by all means quit your actual job and go program a Linux distro and let people donate you money. See how long you will survive working for free with only donations and if you will be able to pay off your monthly bills like your house, etc.
