Me too. If OP is new to the anime he/she can start with the best.

And while I'm typing a lot come to mind like Tokio Ghoul, Appleseed or Attack on Titan which are not bad or older stuff like Vampire Hunter D.

I have to say that I'm not that of an anime freak and I'm rather picky so many don't fit my tastes: I tend to watch seinen and avoid chambaras and fantasy/medieval fantasy/romance/historical geners and mostly focus on horror/mistery/supernatural/dark/gothic/bizarre.

Lucumo: Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuioku Hen (historical, romance, swordplay)
Monster (thriller)
Shigurui (swordplay, artsy)
Kaiba (space travel, dystopia, artsy)
Kaguya-hime no Monogatari (Ghibli movie)
Kenpuu Denki Berserk (90s series - dark fantasy, swordplay)
Koukaku Kidoutai/Ghost in the Shell (1995 movie - cyberpunk)
Akira (cyberpunk)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (mecha, angst)
.hack//Sign (virtual word (fantasy MMORPG))
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (mecha, best Gundam series in my opinion, as there are no annoying kids in it)
Hunter x Hunter (1999 series, as it's better than the newer one (although it doesn't cover as much) - shounen, adventure)
Initial D First Stage/Second Stage (mountain racing, eurobeat)
Gankutsuou/Count of Monte Cristo (thriller)
Hajime no Ippo (first series - boxing)
Versailles no Bara (historical, swordplay, shoujo)
Major (baseball series, pretty good overall, no idea about the new Major series)
Akagi (mahjong - though, the final arc is incomplete in the anime and it takes forever in general)
Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu (space epic, military)
Touch (baseball, love polygon)
Bokura no (science fiction, angst, tragedy)
Baccano! (mafia, contemporary fantasy, historical)
Ashita no Joe (boxing, pretty different from Hajime no Ippo)
Soukou Kihei Votoms (mecha, genetic modification, space travel)
Detroit Metal City (comedy, parody of death metal)
Kemono no Souja Erin (coming of age, daily life, tragedy)
Kara no Kyoukai (all movies - contemporary fantasy, super power)
Ping Pong the Animation (table tennis, coming of age)

Those are some good anime.

Katanamochi: Great selection :)

especially akira one of my all time fav anime movies.
Thank you. There are also some good ones I forgot like Serial Experiments Lain or Mugen no Ryvius, some anime I watched a decently long time ago which may not be as good anymore when rewatching it (Elfen Lied, Death Note, Code Geass etc) and some I rate highly which are probably too specific to my taste (Zipang comes to mind)...ah, and also anime which are part of a franchise where the prequels aren't as good (Seikai no Senki II, Kimagure Orange☆Road: Ano Hi ni Kaeritai).

And even if you can't watch Dragon Ball Z without desire to punch TV, a lot of people (me included) find its most epic fights incredibly entertaining. (Though I must admit the series really tries audience patientce with entire episodes dedicated to some character charging his "energy dong". Honestly, with Dragon Ball Z: Kararot game (not on GoG) released there is no reason to watch anime now.)
avatar
Katanamochi: LootHunter While i agree with a lot of what you said in response, i do take a slight issue with this, yes they where entertaining, hear me out the planet namek freeza fight for example did go on too long imho and added little value to the to the end of that arc. they could have shortened it a still achieved its desired effect. and that goes for some other epic multi ep fights scenes.as well.

but all in all db, dbz good series in raw and subs, the dubs suck
Well, that's the main issue with it being a manga adaptation. They caught up to the manga and then drew it out forever. I guess they didn't expect it to take this long since otherwise, they often just used fillers. But well, I prefer Dragon Ball over Dragon Ball Z. The first is an adventure series, the second one is basically only about fighting.
I just realized I didn't list BLAME! one of the most misteriuos, criptic, beautifully designed and one of my all time favourites manga.

There's a series and an OVA but beware: you will have an hard time knowing what's going on without reading the manga first and even then a little help is needed.

Edit:
How did I forget:
Speed Grapher
KARAS.

I respect that lol then what do you think about Attack on Titan, to me that series was stylish and animation was great, gore level was through the roof, the first series did a great job setting up the mystery like the giant titan, but ruined in the second series,

there was one scene in the show where normally gory stuff don't stick with me, but this scene mkes me shudder to this day, when eren was swallowed by the titan before his transformation, its not the body parts in the stomach, but the girl sitting in the stomach acid repeating i am sorry before disappearing into the acid, that scene made me flinch more than any other.it suggest when in fantasy a monster eats someone you think game over, you don't think they are still alive and in terror inside it, this show graphically brought that home to me.

which why i rate the first series in my top ten.

What streaming services do you recommend for anime? Is it worth getting more than one? Do I need to worry about censorship with particular services or for certain series? Are there shows worth watching that are only available on DVD or Blu-ray?

BTW, thanks for the recommendations so far. Keep 'em coming.

I haven't tried it myself, but I know people who say Hulu is crap. According to the person who told me this, there are many shows that you can't watch without paying for Hulu Live(their live TV plan), which costs a hefty $50+ per month.
Sorry I couldn't give a positive recommendation, but I myself am currently researching which streaming services to use, if any.

Some people say CrunchyRoll(or is it CrunchRoll?) is a good choice.
Crunchyroll is the only one that you can watch free (with ads) afaik. It's mostly simulcasting stuff (it has the majority of stuff that airs each season, barring stuff that ends up being exclusive to other services), so the majority of the series are the tv broadcast versions and are subtitled only. Though sometimes older stuff or dubs get added. It also has a manga service, but it's kind of fallen by the wayside and I don't think it's added any new series in years.

Hidive is mostly stuff licensed by Sentai filmworks and other companies that came out of the collapse of ADV. Has dubbed and home release versions of shows too, as well as simulcast stuff.

Then there's Funimation's service for Funi exclusive simulcast/simuldub stuff. Though I haven't actually used their service so I can't comment on it.

VRV has a lot of the content on crunchy and hidive on top of other content, but I never tried their service.

I agree with you. The regurgitated chewed umans and how titans tear up people like they are beef jerkies unsettled me. Attack on Ttitan is good and ddefinitely one of the goriest anime around there.

I did really like the mistery surrounding some of the characters like Annie Leonhart and the general atmosphere.
I don't like how a little too overdramatic and stupid idealistic at times Eren is and how grown up and high soldiers basically listen to and let teenagers define military tactics but it could be me, as I said, I'm a seinen guy.
I watched only season 1 and 2 but, yeah, I'm mostly fine with it.

[SPOILER]
I did also find unbelievable how a father could use mutations on his son in order to fulfill his own agenda

Here's my list.

I really like Lupin III.

Golden Boy

You will want to watch this in English dub. Trust me, this show is great, only 6 episodes and it's an oldie from the early 90's

Here watch

Well the one guy in Full Metal DID turn his own child into a monster.....so it is within the realm of possibilities in such shows/worlds.

I really like Lupin III.
Old school Lupin(where he was a near unrepentant lech/etc) was awesome.....the newer series turned him into a near paragon of the downtrodden...and while still somewhat fun to watch they are(imo) not as good as the older ones.

The worst offender in that regard was Castle of Cagliostro where Lupin's basically a saint...
