Extended support for our expanding catalog of Linux games

A happy day for all worshipers of the mighty penguin! Ubuntu 16.04 LTS has been released and is fully supported by GOG.com, making your Linux gaming experience smoother and more stable than ever before.

Alongside the 16.04 release GOG.com will of course continue to support 14.04, although we suggest keeping your system updated to minimize the risk of running into any issues. Our support also extends to any future non-LTS releases, official Ubuntu flavors (like Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc.), and derivatives (e.g. Linux Mint, elementaryOS etc.), so as long as your operating system is part of the Ubuntu family, you have nothing to worry about. Naturally, our technical support and refund policy apply to all these versions.

Our brave QA team has been tirelessly testing the games in our Linux catalog and we're happy to report that nearly all of them are already fully compatible with Ubuntu 16.04. The very few temperamental ones are getting fixed soon, so keep an eye out for patches.

AMD Radeon users should remember that the fglrx driver is removed from this release and they should use the opensource driver that is included in 16.04 by default. Read more about it here.

If you find yourself in need of technical support or more details regarding Linux matters, head to this FAQ. All the information in it will be updated soon.

Happy upgrades!

For those interested, here are some statistics about GOG's current official Linux support (including removed games):

There are 450 games with official Linux support:
http://www.an-ovel.com/cgi-bin/magog.cgi?ver=728&scp=gdspurio&dsp=ipgfsorlcmbahTP&ord=&flt=oan~lu4lu6lm7~&opt=n

All support Ubuntu 14.04 (including the three Valhalla Hills "games", which until yesterday did not). All support Ubuntu 16.04 (with the possible exception of three removed games).

Hunter65536: I have AMD graphic card and APU, is it safe for me to get this if I want to play games? I read here that it was okay for normal things but bad for games because no catalyst drivers.
If you're planning to, or currently play newer games that require OpenGL 4.2 or higher, then you'll have to stick with an old distro and fglrx.

If not I wouldn't worry about using the open source driver, it works very well. And the new AMDGPU driver will likely never support older graphics cards unless the community does it, so it's going to be a long wait.
Ubuntu was nice and all once upon a time, but it's kind of bloated right now.
Of course that only applies to the vanilla version.
It still maintains very up-to-date repositories though. So that's a plus, I was never able to make makefiles work. They were impious heretical sorcery to me.
If any company claims use of the Steam runtime as the reason to not release their Linux version(s) then that doesn't hold up: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-runtime/blob/master/COPYING

Of the 450, 3 do not officially support Ubuntu 14.04:
http://www.an-ovel.com/cgi-bin/magog.cgi?ver=728&scp=gdspurio&dsp=ipgfsorlcmbahTP&ord=&flt=oan~lu4lu6lm7~onn~lu4~&opt=n

Of the 450, 14 do not officially support Ubuntu 16.04:
http://www.an-ovel.com/cgi-bin/magog.cgi?ver=728&scp=gdspurio&dsp=ipgfsorlcmbahTP&ord=&flt=oan~lu4lu6lm7~onn~lu6~&opt=n

Of the 450, 3 do still support Mint 17 and will likely continue doing so for quite a while:

P.S. The links are live searches, so they will update as GOG adds more Linux games.
I believe this might be a little error on our side. As for the very moment there are no games on the website that support only one version of Ubuntu.

Linux Mint is obviously still supported as long as it is derived from supported by us Ubuntu versions.

I'm reminded right now that I'm glad I run a rolling release. I don't have to decide if I should perform the major upgrade because it might break something. I get to break things with updates all the time instead :)

How can it be smother? I still need to download a whole installer after every minor patch, since GOG fails to deliver incremental patches or that vaporware client. In fact Linux + GOG is a No-Go! even Gamejolt or Itch.io have linux clients..
What are you talking about? GOG's had incremental updates for awhile now. They've even started keeping multiple patches, so you don't have to worry about missing one.

Nice, and linuxvangog's post is also encouraging.

Presenting things in that way might cause some misinterpretation. Every single game supported on Ubuntu 14.04 is also supported on Mint 17.
Our decision not to keep explicitly mentioning it on game pages was a matter of keeping the minimal requirements as clear as possible while introducing support of newer distributions.

We can't emphasise enough that the scope of our support is actually extending.

As long as your Mint distribution is an Ubuntu 14.04 or 16.04 derivative (that excludes, of course, LMDE), we support it, just like any other Ubuntu derivative.

Fair enough. I'll update my post in a few minutes.

Could you please explain the state of the three Valhalla Hills "games"? As of yesterday, they supported Mint 17, but not Ubuntu 14.04. Now they support Ubuntu 16.04, but still not Ubuntu 14.04. Does it mean that now they no longer officially support Mint 17? Or do they?

EDIT: Never mind, I see that the three Valhalla Hills "games" now also support Ubuntu 14.04. I wonder what changed.
EDIT: Updated my original post.

Most excellent!

I play my old games on my laptop when traveling, and it runs Linux. In fact, most of my gaming is on Linux these days.

A long time ago somebody asked what does "GOG" stand for and some blue (probably TeT or Judas) jokingly wrote "Grumpy Old Gamers". I think the phrase describes perfectly many of posts under today's announcement. ;)

What are you talking about? there are some patches but not for the majority games for the most time you have to redownload the whole installer...
