I was really looking forward to it, despite Legacy being a letdown (other than great visuals and music). I was hoping the third movie might do better, bring Tron (the character) back, give us a better villain with Cillian Murphy making something more of his cameo in Legacy, possibly David Warner coming back. Alas, it's dead. And with all the Marvel and Star Wars stuff, it might not have another chance. Not in time for Bruce Boxleitner to be Tron again at least. A pity. I think todays world, with computers and the internet so everpresent in our lives, really needs a new Tron movie, one that would make an intelligent use of it's premise to explore that new digital frontier.
Yeah I read that this morning. Somehow I'm not as upset as I thought I'd be. We'll always have the original which is timeless.
Well everyone could not give the last movie a chance because of their rose tinted bias of the old movie.
Strange, I just read about that as well and a few hours ago, I actually bought a DVD of the original.

Tron: Legacy was pretty successful when it came out. The cancellation appears to have more to do with the disappointing returns of Tomorrowland.

Tron: Legacy just didn’t resonate with me. Although it had many good moments, lots of nostalgia and fantastic music, I could not get over the many dull parts, especially in the latter part of the film. There was a distinct lack of excitement. I have tried watching it again several times, but I always stopped right after Quorra entered the game. Too much drama and all. I also didn’t like the style of the grid as much, it wasn’t as abstract and geeky as in the first one, more futuristic rather than ‘computery’ actually.
I wasn`t keen on the first one, but many years later watched it again & got somewhat into it.
Took three attempts to like the second (ran out of dvds, had to watch something ;p), so was sort of looking forward to a third, hoping that they`d get better at it over time.

Ah well /Meh!

Well said. Even thought they spent nothing on the effects for the 1st one and millions on the 2nd, I thought the first looked much more "multidimensional" as if they might actually be inside a computer. Legacy looked like a bunch of people in black glowing latex on a sound stage.

Mind you I could watch Olivia Wilde in latex all day but it did nothing for the story. :P

And TRON 2.0 the game, which is a far superior sequel to the original movie than Legacy ever was.
I didn't even know a 3rd one was planned. Quite frankly I'm surprised. I thought Legacy was awful. They should have gone with the story of TRON 2.0 in my opinion. Story-wise, that was a much better sequel to the original than Legacy was.
Some years ago I watched Tron for the first time and wasn't very impressed with the narrative side of it. The story seemed clumsy and not very well done.

Tron Legacy felt a bit better, but also seemed like too loose a sequel.

Still, I think it deserved a third one. I think it would have been worth watching.

Hehe, we wrote just about the same thing simultaneously.

I'm not sure about that. The estimated budget for it is 17 million dollars, almost the same as the estimated budget for The Empire Strikes Back; and the effects were pretty damn complex for those days.

Personally though, the stylistic shift in the sequel does kind of work for me, because, whether intentional or not, it pretty much reflects a big part of the movie's backstory. The world in the original Tron was depicted as an abstract, almost coldly "logical" realm, very foreign to the human mind; whereas Tron: Legacy shows that same world after Flynn has already spent a long time there, influencing and shaping it. So, it only makes sense that he would have shaped it into something much more familiar and tangible to him, i.e. making it appear more like the real world.

Maybe I'm wrong. :P

I think I just mentioned that because, when I stumbled across this thread, I happened to be watching the very extensive "making of" on the DVD of Tron, which goes into great detail about the film's visuals.
