Eitot: it wasn’t as abstract and geeky as in the first one, more futuristic rather than ‘computery’ actually.
tinyE: Well said. Even thought they spent nothing on the effects for the 1st one and millions on the 2nd, I thought the first looked much more "multidimensional" as if they might actually be inside a computer. Legacy looked like a bunch of people in black glowing latex on a sound stage.
That has been a big problem with the sequel and with the animated series Tron: Uprising. It could have as well been placed on an alien planet or in the future o another dimension, anything really. The whole "were inside the computer thing" got lost somewhere. The disk fights and the lightcycles did not evoke the "video game" feelig either, the way they were done.
I thought the movie should have been about something like Clu using all of our profiles on in social media, our bank account data and all the other stuff we leave online to make his own copies of human beings, his army of fake "users" or something like that. Something that would be unique to the setting and also touch on contemporary themes.
As it was both Legacy and Uprising are basically an attempt by Disney to turn Tron into their Star Wars, with an evil empire taking over and everything. But now they bought the real thing, so they don't need what they Tron into anymore, and have no interest in actuall Tron. It's even kind of obvious that some of what they were doing with Tron morphed into Star Wars. We had animated Tron Uprising, and now we have Star Wars Rebels, both shows about the forming resistance against the newly established Empire, and a new guy being trained in the ways of the warrior.
cogadh: And TRON 2.0 the game, which is a far superior sequel to the original movie than Legacy ever was.
Absolutely. It's the best FPS I ever played, and a great sequel to Tron. If they just filmed that, it would probably be even better than the original movie.
