Yup! You were part of a test to see if someone could be pinged by submitting a (nearly) empty post. I had to put three spaces in the box before it would let me submit the post, but it made no obvious addition to the post it merged onto and still pinged you. Useful to know, but only in the admin thread!

Well the first thing is to forget about quotes. Quotes have nothing to do with whether someone is pinged or not.

You can quote someone and not ping them, you can ping someone and not quote them, or both or neither. They're completely independent things.

The ping comes from clicking reply on someone's post and making a post using that specific post window. So to ping someone and not quote them you click reply on a post of theirs and delete the quote - which is what I've done here.
