snowkatt: or how much grinding fucking jrpgs have
avatar
dtgreene: I know of no jrpgs that would be described by that adjective.
then maybe YOUR knowledge of jrpgs is lacking

odd i am sure but entirely possible
For people who have never played a FF game, this thread just became incredibly dull. :P
Gah post eating threads.
avatar
snowkatt: urgh dont remind me of etrian odyssey
a fucking grinding dungeon crawler with a difficulty spike from hard to murderous

disgaea is also a bloody grindfest
avatar
omega64: The Item world, just wow.

They at least give difficulty options in the newer ones Etrian Odyssey's.
I can't recall a dungeon crawler that wasn't 50% grinding.
i gave up after the first one
punishingly hard grind fest
avatar
omega64: None, you're just bad at them. :P

*waits patiently for it to release*

That reminds me of Etrian Odyssey.
You actually need to do some grinding on the first floor or you get crushed on the second.
Avoid fighting some monsters on the first one at first or you die.

First of all, that adjective does not describe Etrian Odyssey.

Secondly, if you fight all normal encounters you come across in Etrian Odyssey and thoroughly explore and map each floor, your level should be high enough without having to grind.

(It's also worth noting that the difficulty isn't sustained through the entire game in EO1; after a while, fights become manageable aside from the occasional Muskoid ambush/sleeplock.)

Thirdly, the Disgaea series doesn't require grinding for the main storyline; it's only the postgame where that becomes necessary.

Jesus with your tone, you should have my rep score.

Also, in most non-ancient JRPGS, including Final Fantasy 4 and onward (but excluding the MMOs), if you simply fight all the battles you encounter playing the game normally, you should be of a high enough level to beat the game.

Actually, if you are *really* familiar with the game mechanics, it's actually possible, in many FF games, to beat the game even avoiding most or all enemy encounters, or at least avoiding the XP from all encounters where it is possible. (Yes, some of the FF games can be beaten at single digit levels; FF9's superboss, for example, can be beaten at level *1*.)

pimpmonkey2382.313: Incorrect, 4 and 6 required grinding. I did absolutely none in 4 and 6 and hit brick walls in both games, chrono trigger also.
Incorrect, grinding isn't necessary in those games. How else would a LLNMG be possible in FF6?

Chrono Trigger *definitely* doesn't require any (unless you count the part where you have to mash the A button to continue).

FF4 doesn't either; if you just play the game and don't run from everything, you will be at a decent level. (Don't forget that status effects are useful in that game, especially in the DS version.)

Lets actively ignore anything he says. I guess my years of playing those games since the 90's have been totally overruled by his infinite wisdom and knowledge of such games.
