Is this a thread about getting drunk or this the thread you come to when you are drunk? If this is a thread about getting drunk, I'm sure it's okay to ask alcohol related questions here. So here is my question. What hard liquor is smooth other than vodka? I'm looking for something other than vodka to drink but I hate the taste of whiskey(the whiskey I've tried). I like cognac but the only cognac(small bottle for $40) I see in stores is too expensive for me. No offense to the people who enjoy whiskey and the people who make whiskey and the people who both make and enjoy the stuff.

CthuluIsSpy: I clearly have a bizarre definition of drunk :D

Might have something to do with the fact I rarely drink; only at social events.

P1na: Well, I "rarely" drink myself. I could probably count with one hand's fingers the times I've drunk by myself like I'm doing tonight, and I only go out every now and again. But, when I do go out... well, I have my share of stories. From climbing the stairs to get back home in all fours going to classes in my pijamas due to extreme hangover back at uni or getting beaten up (and I can't remember why!) to arguing with Italian police or getting arrested in Belgium.

Almost all these times I was drunk, but I wasn't passing out vomiting!
After reading this, I understand why you rarely drink. :P

Yeah, I'd feel sorry for the world if I did it more often.
Just sitting here, sipping bourbon, after spending about $5,200 (that's about 4,000 Euros, giver or take) on a new air-handler for my house. I thought occurs to me, as it often does at these times, that ATF is a great idea for a convenience store; it is not an original idea, mind you, by any stretch, but I still ruminate on it. The idea of alcohol, tobacco, AND firearms all being sold in the same place is my idea of efficient one-stop shopping! Good times can be had by all. If marijuana is ever legalized, we can include that too! If nothing else, at least such a place would likely succeed in culling the herd a little bit....

Wait... you want something smooth, and then you admit that you think vodka is 'smooth'? I suppose if you want something that has no body at all, that might qualify... ;)

Regardless, if you like cognac, then you might try some blended malt scotches. Those are generally much smoother going down than the single malt variety (although I, personally, enjoy single malts much more, as the flavor is much better defined). My drink of choice, is Wild Turkey 101, and I find this bourbon very full bodied and smooth going down, although you may decide to opt for a lower proof. At least here in the US, bourbon is about 1/2 as expensive as either single-malt scotch or cognac; even for the good stuff.

edit:
FYI, in North Carolina, Wild Turkey 101 sells for about $45 at an ABC store for 1.75 liters. If you live is a state that no longer as ABC laws, you could get it for mid/high $30s, easily.

Vodka is smooth for me. What I mean is, the taste is not too strong. I can drink vodka like it's water. But when it comes to whiskey, I'm like agghhh, what am I drinking...

Yeah, I knew what ya meant. I am just tipsy and giving you a hard time :). I stand behind my suggestion of blended scotch and/or bourbon though... if you like cognac. BTW, which whiskey was it that you tasted and though was harsh? I mean, there are some whiskeys and bourbons out there that I certain consider battery acid (Evan Williams, anyone?)
My dog took a HUGE SHIT on the sidewalk...
It was nasty :F
Oh, here is a scotch that is incredibly smooth. However, it isn't cheap (on par with the cognacs you mentioned): Glenmorangie Sherry Cask

That is what dogs do best. Once in Scotland, I saw a dog take a shit and the final product kind of looked like the Eiffel tower. I'm serious. Then the dog had this kind of proud look on his or her face.

Well, keep in mind I drink 101 proof bourbon... I think it is smooth, on par with Hennessy cognac (I liked it before it became all gangsta! :P), but ymmv.
