Elmofongo: I have begun watching TNG. First episode in and already I am introduced to Q.

That was fast :P

It''s like if they introduced Team Rocket at the very first episode of Pokemon.
encounter at farpoint is both utterly boring and plodding and oddly engaging
its certainly a very odd opener to the series

Already I hate Q. And I hate even more because now he is made even more famous because of MLP :P

(I watched the documentary on Netflix a long while ago)

And yes I was bored. And really GIANT SPACE JELLYFISH? Its like the story was trying to introduce the new characters and recurring things in the series like the controversial Holodeck.

Thank goodness Season 3 will have The Best Of Both Worlds.

It gains a lot in hindsight, knowing the series finale. DS9 may be the series with the heavy story-arc focus, but TNG has this really nice bookend kind of thing with it's premiere-finale, that does not happen often. The only other one I can think of right now is Miami Vice.

Deep Space Nine better be Game of Thrones level of Dark and Adult filled with Moral Ambiguity. (And awesomeness)

Depsite what snowkatt said I always saw TNG as simply TOS with a bigger budget , writing and production values with new characters. And thats not really a bad description.

No, DS9 is actually good. No forced violence and sex and stuff because blood + tits = money. If it gets dark it's because of issues it explores, not because you need to 18+ for it. And I guess that is the key. It explores the dark stuff, but does not exploit.

Well done, sir. Well done.

Oh wait, didn't you dislike Babylon 5? ... Eeeh, I'll let that slide for now. For now.

Can you explain the similarities between Babylon 5 and DS9?

Nvm new question how did DS9 ripped off Babylon 5 when DS9 premired a year earlier?

Me? It's my favourite tv show ever. I said so in this thread even, if memory serves.

DS9 premiered earlier, but did not really go into the Babylon 5 story-arc style until season 3 (or even 4). And I believe Straczynski's early plans for B5 were actually plans for a Star Trek show, that he pitched to the studio, but they didn't pick it up then, but used some of his ides for DS9.

Creators of Babylon 5 sent.... Whoever was creating DS9 full script for B5 some time before DS9 aired.

Because I've already had my say along the way, about the movies, my favourite episodes, even how I like all the 60s wacky stuff. I just didn't feel like going over all that again.

One question regarding the TOS era. Every time I see like promotional poasters of TOS they always she this white blonde haired women with the crew. Especially in poster shots of the whole TOS crew like this:

http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/memoryalpha/images/6/6d/Star_Trek_TOS_cast.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20090218222025&path-prefix=en

Yet I don't remember her at all? Who is this women yet I never seen her in movies. Yet these images imply she was an essential member of the crew?

The picture is small as shit, but I think that is nurse Chapel. She was a supporting character, had a crush on Spock, I remember she was in the first movie, as a doctor by then. More importantly, she was played by Gebe Roddenberry's wife, who also portrayed the first oficer of the Enterprise in the original pilot that wasn't picked up, and later in TNG she has a recurring role as the mother of Deanna Troy.
