A must upgrade.
Think of all those little (and not so little) new bugs, all those messages about risks and high risks....
And don't forget the games that are no longer running with this improved mix of Win 7 + 8.1.
At last our timer for updates is running wild in the next future ;-)

Hippo! Happy new year!
When can we upgrade?

Can we upgrade now?
I will take the offer if I can dual-boot Windows 10 and my original Windows 7 install. If not, I may take the offer and then try to dual-boot with Windows XP.

Got to make sure I don't lose games compatibility. Doubtful I will have room for two PCs in the near future.

Petrell: My 3 lisence Office 2010 cost me 50€ and I can use it indefinately. No way I would pay more than 5€ per year per computer for subscription. And my laptop only has internet when at home or at my parents so it should not require constant internet connection.
avatar
BoxOfSnoo: 5 euro per year is a fair price to you? That's... oh my.

Right now Windows 7 or 8.1 is something like $120 or so. For a single OEM version. $10 per MONTH, if you want to pay it off in a single year. You think 42 cents euro per month is fair for that amount of code? If so, I don't think there's a software company on the planet that actually wants you as a customer.

Don't worry, I get the sentiment. I won't get Spotify because I judge $10/month is too expensive for me. (I do happily spend on Netflix, though). Maybe Windows isn't worth anything to you and you could easily switch to Linux. I encourage that! But that's just not a reasonable or sustainable price.
Why should I pay MORE for subscription than I pay for software bought from store? I've used Office 2010 (as I said it's 3 lisence box) for 2-3 years now and expect to use it for 3-5 years more, all for 50 € (as for Offices before it, I used Office 97 for 6 years and Office XP for 7 years. That office XP is still in use actually on my parents computer so it's been used for total of 11 years now)). So paying 5€ per computer per year is actually generous of me as at that price subscription over same period would cost me from 75 to 120 €. I can't even image digital software or service I would pay 10$/€ per month for (well maybe GOG if it ment I get to download all games in catalog while subscribed. I might even use Netflix if it allowed me to download everything DRM-free. :-p).

My only subscribed software currently in use is F-Secure Internet Security. I paid 99€ for 42 month subscription (3 year with 6 months extra) usable on 3 computers simultaneously so it's ~0,79€ a month per computer or 9.43€ per year.
Yes. I always skip a MS Gen version of windows. Started like this for me..

Windows 3.0 No
Windows 3.1 yes
Windows NT No
Windows 95 Yes
Windows 98 No
Windows 98 second edition yes
Windows ME No
Windows XP yes
Windows Vista No
Windows 7 yes
Windows 8.x No
Windows 9 I mean 10 Yes.

So I have to follow this never ending MS event over the many years I've grown using the OS. Call me crazy but it works. Not saying version 9 I mean 10 is best.. but better than 8 and will show progression over 7.

It seems a lot of companies are going more a subscription route rather than straight up software. WoW, Playstation Now, Season Passes, etc. They want more long term pricing that's DRM-typed drip feeding. Or maybe i'm reading into it wrong...

Hmm seems strangely effective.
If they go subscription will it really surprise anyone? Look at Microsoft office. It's a subscription service now. Eventually every software company will try to make sure you aren't buying their products but the ability to use them so they can force you to upgrade when they like, and kill the thing when they don't want to deal with it anymore. We're seeing it in games too, obviously as online DRM etc.

They want more controll as always and MS wants to be able upgrade operating system without asking end user about it (here's mandatory service pack 1172, your computer stops working if you don't install it). It's also ultimate form of DRM as MS could pull the plug any time for any reason. Do you really want an OS with kill switch in hands of MS and in extension, US goverment?
Windows 10 = DOA
Windows 10 is not going to be subscription-based. Someone earlier in this thread linked to an article on the matter;

blotunga: More importantly what about my GOGs :)
Been running the preview though the "Insider" program. Here is what i tried from GOG:

Sanitarium
Arx Fatalis
Bad Mojo
Blood 2
Dragonsphere
Jade Empire
Painkiller
Build engine: Shadow Warrior
XIII

NonGOG:

Bad Day L.A.
Hard Reset
Quake 1/2
Morrowind
Infernal

Now I didnt play a ton but i launched configured and gave it a good :20 minutes to freakout and/or crash. Seemed to do ok. Sanitarium had a glitch but a reinstall fixed... Bad Mojo crashed but then started working after i reduced sound enhancements in DX. DosBOX titles just worked, tried Duke3D and Blood 1 as well. All the win8 tricks apply and work. Lots of dependencies on some... and on a bright note somehow Infernal works, only ever got it to work in a custom designed WINE setup through Linux.

rtcvb32: A heavy well done CGI presentation... then i have to laugh at it because they are like 'click' on a picture and double's it's representation to a 3D world and i shake my head because i know it's probably going to be a huge pain to program.
They had a live demo on stage. Also, the press were offered to play Minecraft and make Skype calls with it after the event.

Gilozard: If it's a hardware keyboard...I would consider it.

Having a physical keyboard on a phone is amazing. The phone goes from a toy to a pocket computer. Texting, calendar and contacts - not to mention any browsing - are suddenly so much easier. I can actually use my phone to write really documents and posts. I would never use a phone without a physical keyboard. I'll keep ordering off eBay and flashing CM ROMs for as long as possible.
You should REALLY try WP's flow keyboard. You can make whole sentences in few seconds, much faster than with a physical keyboard.

Obviously not. I've never really been that happy with Windows to begin with honestly. There's been a lot of strange turns and decisions in recent decades. Naturally what could have changed everything happened long before i was born or had any chance to affect. Too bad... Really makes me wish i had super powers, become an anti-hero with the intent to fix the system while being portrayed as the bad guy.

And i'm sure pre-fixed objects in AR is easy enough to show off... But the other examples, like attaching prototype 3D models to a bike? Or the kitchen sink example? Not so easily.

Quite often the engine for a game for you to play is much easier to run and use than the world building and level editor needed to build the levels for the engine.

hedwards: Most people don't though, it's more typical to use a copy of windows for 2-3 years minimum for most people. And it tends to be bundled with hardware so most people have no idea how much they're spending.

But, even if you do buy a new copy every time that MS releases a new major version, that's still probably 2-4 years minimum in most cases. Excluding that long gap that Vista left.
avatar
BoxOfSnoo: Which is my thought for a $30 annual fee. 4 years and you basically pay for a new license, and if they release a new version in that time, you basically get that version for less.
The problem though is all the folks that use their computers for longer than that are probably not going to be happy about that. Especially since MS is going to have to choose to support the hardware longer if they're going to expect to keep charging for a copy of Windows that somebody installed years ago.

I just don't see this as being viable. People are largely happy with Windows because it's free. If they knew how much they were paying for it they would demand a hell of a lot more out of it. But, it's a hidden cost and nobody really knows how much it's adding to the cost of their new computer.

Those things are fucking annoying and the person that invented them ought to be keel hauled. There's a reason why my tablet has a physical keyboard attached to it rather than one of those software keyboards being used all the time.
