Fenixp: a) Correct. In other words, you don't need it if you don't want it. So why even care?

IronArcturus: I didn't mind those since they weren't absolutely necessary to play the main game.

Fenixp: ? Horse armor isn't absolutely necessary to play the main game.
I was talking about the expansion packs from the '90s, such as the 2 official mission packs for Quake 1. They weren't absolutely necessary, but they did actually "expand" the Quake story a little bit. I wish the expansion pack would come back as I grow really tired of DLC. :P

Crackpot.756: That seems to be the main issue here, if we're still talking about the helicopter. It just sits there, teasing you. It may not be necessary to have a helicopter but it's a dick move to put it there and go "lol nope, buy it".
I was miffed about that aspect, too, but then took a second thought. One problem is that it's a multi-player game. If one player in a match has the DLC then every other player needs a version of the software that shows that DLC - at least for something this large and that is not simply cosmetic fluff. In this case, one person might have the helicopter DLC so she jumps in, takes off, and starts flying around air-lifting jeeps and whatnot. If that helicopter didn't exist in every other players' installation then the DLC-renting player would either be flying a green box or doing a Wonder Woman imitation. Which would be cool, but wrong game.

If it didn't appear as a mountable vehicle for those who haven't rented the DLC then that might create a weird case where the helicopter magically appears as soon as someone jumps aboard, or have some players griping about 'cheats' since they can't get in the vehicle.

I'm not sure how to get around those two things. What I would expect to see (and maybe ArmA3 does this?) is that before the match begins, a window pops up to say "This map contains the following DLC available for purchase. Would you like to rent any of them now, for immediate use?" At least the players would then be made aware beforehand instead of being faced with this "Uh, wait. What? Hold on - what is this DLC and what else does it come with?" mid-game intrusion into the game world.

It is uch better than excluding players who lack the dlc from the server but it still isn't a very nice thing to do. Apparently the data is already onn my drive. ARMA 2 had an expansion, taht included a whole campaign, zounds of vehicles and whatnot. Now you actually have to buy (or "rent") Ingame inventory to use it. THe DLC offers around 2 Helicopters. That, combined with the price is atrocious.

F4LL0UT: snip.
Oh, i thought that single player and coop missions were different, it makes sense then (still dumb 13€ for 2 helicopters).
Seeing how much noise made this thread (and how many discussions exist in other fora) I'll have to admit that the company of this game, knows how to create some buzz... I didn't know about this game before (and I'm sure many other people too!) and I think that the company just made a successful advertisement about it... And even if it advertises a bad thing about the game, it's still an advertisement... (and free!) ;-)

That's actually a really good point. XD We have screwed ourselves over by bitching.

HereForTheBeer: ...
Ah. I had actually not thought of that (obviously). Yes, I suppose at least the model would have to be there for everyone to see. Not sure how this could be handled differently, I know next to nothing about MP, only that in-game DLC announcements/stores can be annoying.

Nah, at most we made it infamous, not famous :P

Yeah, the online aspect, along with auto-updates, makes it a bit tricky. I mean, technically, they already gave you the content somewhere along the line, else clicking "okay" would likely boot you from the game and you'd have to wait for the download and installation. So it's there, and your bandwidth and hard drive space was already sucked up for premium content you didn't ask for. This is nothing new (similar to "demos" that are actually the full game but you unlock the rest of the game with a key code) but it's a bit jarring to encounter it mid-match as you did.

Dunno what the solution is. Would be nice if games like this would offer the option to not be presented with those purchase options while you're actually playing. Save it for the menus or for before the match starts.
