Sometimes by losing a battle you find a new way to win the war.

March onto the real-time 3D battlefield in the strategic, tabletop-inspired title, <span class="bold">Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat, now available for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com.

Jump into the fantasy tabletop world of Warhammer Fantasy from Games Workshop in Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat and take control of a small army. You will have to manage your forces and weigh your strengths and weaknesses wisely to extend your influence, expand your treasury, and enlist new recruits to see your army grow. Choose your battles carefully, as your moves will affect your in-game future. If you are up to the challenge of a highly difficult and tactically demanding strategy, Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat is for you, but be warned: your patience will be tested with the defeats you are due to face on your way to victory. The game’s combat system got many a word of praise, but do not be fooled - it does not come at the expense of character development, plot, or animation, and the music is astounding. All features of the title come together to truly bring the Warhammer Fantasy tabletop classic to life.

<span class="bold">Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat is DRM-free at GOG.com. If tactically challenging strategies are your thing, make sure to give this one a try.

Cannot get this to even start, any ideas?
The game doesn't even start for me. Tried it on 2 XP machines: behavior is the same - first time you try to run the game game process gets 50% CPU but nothing happens. Second time you try to run the game explorer gets 99% ..and nothing hapens..I'm a bit dissapointed coz some time ago Iwas able to run the game using directions found on some abandonware site.

Edit: I found it:

1) Copy RMORPH folder contents to your windows\system32 folder.
2) Copy WARFB folder to C:\GAMES folder (or whatever folder you want, but then
you'll need to change paths in reg file).
3) Create empty folder TEMP inside WARFB folder.
4) Create folder UPDATE inside WARFB folder.
5) Create folder BINARY inside WARFB\UPDATE folder.
6) Copy only files (not the folders!) from \WARFB\FILE\BINARY to
C:\GAMES\WARFB\UPDATE\BINARY folder.
7) Download, unpack and Run file SOTHR.reg to register required dlls.
8) In your WARFB folder set for game executable compatibility option
"Run in 256-color mode".
9) Copy files from \WING\ directory to Windows\system32:
"C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\WING.DLL"
"C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\WING32.DLL"
"C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\WINGDE.DLL"
"C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\WINGDIB.DRV"
"C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\WINGPAL.WND"
9) Run the game. If you want windowed mode, ALT-TAB from it and then select it
from taskbar, it should stay windowed.

Hey guys, just downloaded SOHR on my windows xp laptop and it works fine, however i recently installed it on my windows 8 laptop and it doesnt even start. I have a message pop up saying:

"Load file (dll/wnd.dll) not found.
Press ok to try and cancel to exit

once i click ok a black screen pops up and shows a fatal error has occured then lists a new file which is missing every time i click ok... these are a few of the files:

(binary/standard.pal
binary/g;lue/windmill.pal
binary/icons.pal

i mean lists hundreds of missing files then once you hold down enter and goes gthrough all the missing files the game then closes

any help would be greatly apreciated :)

solved my own problem lol I simply ran a compatability test and found the game works using

windows xp service pack 3

Maybe post this in the game specific forum?
Then people dont have to look hard after it in case more posts move this longer back.

gdelaroche: Looks like we are all having problems with freeze at "Prepare for Battle Screen"

GOG any solutions please?!
I was having this problem in Windows 8.1 when I was running the game using the directly downloaded files. I installed GOG Galaxy and imported the game folder into that, and now the game works perfectly.

Hope this helps some other people!

Nowhere specifically. The extras aren't necessary for the game itself. They are there if you want to peruse them outside the game (read the manual/reference card or listen to the soundtrack).

Howdy.
Works on: Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8 only) and it's a peculiar game in terms of running I say.

i can see a message 'the folder name cannot include any of the following characters.'

You can always check the GOG forums and call support! ;)
