CharlesGrey: They already have a pretty wide range of head models from NPC characters ( probably even more now, with the new expansion content ), but I imagine the real problem is making alternate hairstyles, facial hair etc. work with the armour models. Or maybe they just didn't really bother to try. I know there are some fan made mods which replace the player character models/textures, at least for the old version of the game.
I really don't want to play through the game as Mr. Generic McDullbutt. Give me an interesting character, or the option to build my own. This is one of the main reasons why I'm still not sure whether to pick up a copy of ELEX. The gameplay looks pretty fun, but the character is about as generic as they come, and I find it hard to enjoy an RPG when I don't even care about the main character and what happens to them.

Hah hah. I know it's not such a big deal in a top-down "Loot'em'Up", but in story-heavy open world games, such as ELEX, it really bothers me. I watched a Let'sPlay of the first few hours of the game, and oh boy is that player character awful. It's not just that he looks like every other generic AAA male lead character, personality wise I also find it hard to like him or develop any kind of connection. ( Not to mention, the little story sequence that introduces the character feels ridiculous as well. ) Not sure what the PB guys were thinking... If the problem is that they couldn't afford voice acting for multiple versions of the player character ( male, female, young, old etc. ), then I'd rather have an old fashioned "silent protagonist", with a wider range of dialogue options in text form, as long as that would mean I could customize and play the character the way I want. After playing Dragon's Dogma, the Souls games or the Elder Scrolls series, this just feels disappointing. ( I know those all have bigger budgets, but various indie games manage to have decent custom character options as well. ) The Gothic series never had custom player characters either, but at least the standard character was
somewhat likable and interesting.
CharlesGrey: If it's not possible via official means, are there any mods which change the player character model?
Gydion: AllSkins mod. Believe it's among the most popular mods for TQ. I don't recall if any are Viking like.
Yeah, I've seen that one, but I wonder if it will be compatible with the new expansion. Probably not right away, until the creators update it. Most of those skins look goofy, but a few of them would probably be a decent upgrade over the standard male character. If all else fails, I guess I'd just use the standard female character. She doesn't look so bad, and if I remember correctly, the female character had a nicer looking walking animation. I don't remember what it was exactly, but the male walking animation always looked a little off.
