Why did you decide to do regionally pricing for a self-published indie game?

In my eyes this is an abitrary pricing system that penalizes poor people in so called "rich"countries and privileges rich people in so called "poor" countries. And the way it is done, it's not even halfway fair. It's always just the Ex-Soviet states that get a discount while people from much poorer countries (like several countries in Africa) have to pay some of the highest prices worldwide.

Your game would have been a day-1 purchase for me (I really love games like The Clue!), but I'm not going to support this kind of pricing model and wait for it to appear in a bundle instead.

I would really be interested in your reasons and your stance on the matter.

i noticed that too, its a bit overpriced compared to other games that are cheaper.
thats funny cause i often see games that in my opinion would justify a little higher price then other games that look less to me have a big price tag.

i had the clue (english version) on amiga. (cd32 )

its an old game where you have to become a succesfull burglar, it has flat 2d graphics no 3d zooming like the burglar games they release nowadays.

the game had a nice fat paper manual, paper is quite hight glossy and of good quality (all for 10 or 15 guilders, way back in the old days, bought it at a computer fair,i still have the game.

those good old days : if you had 100 or 200 guilders saved up (it was once a year i guess)
you could have some excellent deals and return home with a large grey big garbage bag loaded with retail games and programs, 15 to 20 sometimes 25 full retail games, with the works)
Plus dont forget nowadays euro is more then 2 old guilders, so now we get less retail for more cash
, and they call that progression :D


nowadays retail games are still available but in low quality crappy amaray boxes , 90% of the time without a manual(pdf is not a paper manual)

todays kids (our kids) dont know better, but for everyone born in the 60s -70s, it was a great era.

huzba: A lot of the games I played when I was young spill their influence on the Masterplan, so yeah, that and games like "Tapan Kaikki" and "The Clue" work as inspiration one way or another.
Wow cool to know! I'm gonna test Masterplan tonight on my linux machine :P
And thanks for the tips. Never -ever- I thought I'd hear something about this tremendously obscure Tapan Kaikki game!

Regarding the pricing, we went with the standard system offered by GOG. We unfortunately are not experts on the matter, and thus are quite hesitant to request specific pricing options or changes to the best practices suggested by the marketplace. As a topic this does sound like something that could warrant more conversation on a general level.

The crash you reported (with the attached image) is something that affected the version 1.0, and was promptly fixed in the 1.0.1, which should be available in GOG any time now. I hope you'll have no trouble playing the game normally after receiving the update. :)

Unfortunately the interesting parts (with arguments from both sides and also the point of view from another developer) are hidden somewhere in this huge thread (between reports of new regional priced games), so I'm not sure if it really is a good read to get an overview about this complex matter.

There's a bit of a clarification to be made regarding the pricing. At the time of my response I didn't have the full details of the pricing talks, and had assumed we had a very standard case of prices with The Masterplan. After checking up on this, I found out more:
Initial suggestion by GOG was indeed flat pricing for all regions except for Russia/CIS. We decided to keep our own pricing coherent between GOG and other stores however, so we made changes to the main region pricing: US $19.99 / EUR 19.99€/ UK £14.99.

My apologies for the confusion, unfortunately there was some miscommunication between the involved parties, boosted by the unclarity of the terms.
