rampancy: From what I've seen on the internet, this could potentially work well in WINE.

humppaman: I've played around with the CD version in wine and haven't gotten very far. A fundamental problem seems to be that the game needs to have a 16 bit colour display like it was the standard under Windows 95 or else you'll only get garbled output.

In the end I did install it in a Windows 98 virtualbox instance. That, however, will be a bit tricky to do with the GOG version, since the GOG installer does not run on Windows 98.

But don't despair, I'm sure there is a way to do it if you poke around some more (maybe use wine for the installer, then copy into the Win98 VM?).
That's really unfortunate, as the color depth issue has posed problems for older Windows games in WINE for me, notably Chaos Overlords and MotoRacer. I've actually had to resort to third-party utilities to force the system to use 16-bit colors. The game is rated Silver under WINE 1.5.0, with the main issues being rendering problems with hardware acceleration, and fullscreen play. What version of WINE did you use?

macnbc: Is there any word on if this is the DVD version of the game (which has higher resolution video than the CD version)?
avatar
Tuskin38: There was a DVD release?
Yes! I own it in fact. It came on a single disc instead of the CD release which came on 5.
It's really, really tricky to get to work properly on Windows 7 though. I've run into more than a few gamestopping crashes.

I'm hoping GOG can work their magic and get the DVD version functioning and available!

tikeno: So I take it Chekov's Lost Missions isn't included?
Unfortunately, It is not.

From what I know it is a CD version.

Tuskin38: Does this support USB Joysticks? My CD Copy doesn't.
It does, I played a bit using a USB joystick myself :)

This is great! Thx for your hard work and for the release. :)

It's unfortunate that the addon isn't included. Ah, well. I have the CD lying around here, so maybe I can rig something up. :)
Wikipedia doesn't say anything about a DVD version.
But it sais something about an expansion called Chekov's Lost Missions that features seven new missions, two new multiplayer games, and various improvements to the game interface.
I don't know if this included but I think not. It's not mentioned in the description on the game's site.

Wishlisted.
So does anyone know, since Chekov's lost missions aren't included; are the improvements and fixes from the expansion added? Like Shield displays for your ship?

Mobygames has it right though.

Unfortunately, confirmed above, it's not the DVD version and doesn't include the "lost missions"...
Don't suppose there is any chance of GoG getting the expansion pack, Chekov's Lost Missions? Would be great to have the novel as a bonus as well, I remember my boxed version came with it and it wasn't a bad read.

viperfdl: Wishlisted.
You are not the only one, I wishlisted Academy as well. I remember watching friends of mine play this when it was released.
I would not have bought it if I knew it did not include The Lost Missions.

Come on,GOG, put pressure on whoever you bought the game from to get the Lost mIssions.
I love this game I used to own the original game with 6 or 7 CDs it was a huge game with that many CDs I love the story with Forster and his crew! I heard about the lost missions however I never played it so its not really a loss when I bought this game on Gog =) Best Space Sim that Star Trek created imo!

:)
Also wishlisted the other two Star Trek games.
I would buy this for Chekov's Lost Missions, otherwise I already have the game.
Actually, I even happen to own a big box version of Chekov's Lost Missions, but as it happens, it's the German version, which is sadly totally incompatible with the English version of the game.
I can´t thank GOG enough for this release.

But I do hope later on they will add support to the version with better videos as well as the deleted missions released as the Checkov expansion.

Now, if only they could release birth of the federation (with support to cheats) as well as Klingon Academy...
