Classic RPG hack'n'slashin'.

Revenant, an astonishing and supremely fun classic aRPG, is available now on Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com.

Revenant is here today to serve as a fun-filled throwback to how things used to be done back in the day, and a chance to truly hack it like it's 1999. There's a lot to say about Revenant, but no matter what, the keyword is always "fun". In a game all about combat - smooth controls, responsiveness, and that feeling of weight behind your every attack are all-important, and even today Revenant hits the right spots. Despite its age, the colorful backdrops holds up amazingly well and the motion-captured combat continues to surprise with its variety, over-the-top violence, and plenty of dismemberment. There's a few inventive things to be found here as well, including a magic casting system based on combining runes and talismans to uncover stunning and powerful spells that will let you spectacularly clear out rooms with a single gesture. Beyond that, Revenant is a game of loot, loot, loot, plenty of weapons, great character design and most of all... fun.

Hack away at Revenant, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com!

vicklemos: Ya know... not trying to be a cabrón in here (:P) but for those not so familiar with latin, your name sounds like a lady's one. This may cause some unexpected sapphic love in our dirty minds :P

dtgreene: How is sapphic love dirty?
Re-read what he said. He didn't say sapphic love was dirty, he implied that the sexualization of it due to people having dirty minds was. Not everything needs to be a dumblr crusade, bro. ;)

Leroux: In any case it would fit the description somewhat. I remember it had the promise of an interesting story but felt ultimately disappointing in that regard because the story hardly played a role in the game and wasn't that fleshed out as a consequence. Don't expect many dialogues or even choices, it's pretty much a hack and slash action game with inventory. It's fun but can get a bit repetitive later on and IIRC it's not that long either. Unless I'm totally mistaken, it might have featured a multiplayer mode and to me the single player campaign felt more like an introduction or demo for that (it's not THAT short, but I felt it was lacking in story-telling and variety compared to its length). I still think it's worth owning and trying if you're a fan of these games, I liked it despite its shortcomings.

Matewis: Hmm k from what I remember reading, it felt like the 2nd half of the game was empty or barren in some sense. For the life of me I can't remember what game it was though. Still, even if it was Revenant, I remember that I really enjoyed the demo, so I'll definitely check it out!
Think that may be lionheart as if i remember the first half was good but second half was like hack and slash

It seems I should have :D
Rock on you GOG bastards! Game well and truly bought.
Can we get some reviews of how the game is running on peoples' machines? I think that would be useful.
So...anyone got this to work in WINE?

Also, what were the technical problems with this game that apparenty made it so troublesome for GOG?
I don't even remember this game (maybe just the title).
I like the graphics, but I'll have to watch some LP for gameplay.
The reviews seem around a 7\10.

Fever_Discordia: I think that GOG signed this one up YEARS ago though
avatar
vicklemos: I'm guessing four years (if that's the case), according to the awesome interview I saw the other day :P
Revenant NOT the thing from the interview confirmed!!!

(and I mean that in a 'still more exciting things to look forward to' way rather than an 'in your face' kind of way, the fact that it IS in your face is merely incidental, I didn't want to make a big thing of it...)
Square?! Square Enix is back?!

Well, if EA and Activision will throw in some games again we certainly got the big ones back in! :)

Matewis: I remember one of these old isometric RPGs was praised for starting off extremely well, but ending very poorly (felt like the content after some point was rushed), perhaps due to some trouble the development of the game ran into. I can't remember which game it was though. It's not Revenant I'm thinking of by any chance?
Is the game you had in mind old as in old old early 90s like The Summoning or just old as in late 90s like Dink Smallwood?

That description fits a number of games, most notably Ultima 8 which surely isn't the game you're looking for but is perhaps the most aggravating case of where the publisher deathaxed a game into being released prematurely. One of EA's most unforgiving crimes against gamedom.

Yep, SE and Ubi are finally releasing stuff again. Your move EA and Activision.
Interesting release. Happy gaming! :)
Also now tried downloading the standalone installer direct from the website, ran as admin, installed to D:\ root and still not going on Windows 10.

Tried disabling the preload, disabling the extra bit in the advanced menu and trying software rendering but no luck at all. Guess I am going to have to just install it with Galaxy again and wait and hope that GOG actually fix it.

Until they do I think they need to remove the 10 from the game page as it is not working on Windows 10. I have now given up on it as sick of having to restart my PC.

Thankfully Heimdall arrived this morning for my Atari STe so can get my ARPG fix with Core Designs classic Viking themed game.

Not to be a downer, but supposedly GOG has been working on getting this title operational for a long time, long before the previously most recent Square Enix release. I wouldn't exactly describe this as SE being "back".

Not sure if this counts:

Just tried the demo in Wine-Staging 1.7.49 and I used the following settings:

Clean 32bit prefix set to Win95
Modified my desktop to 16bit color mode (else it crashes/freezes)
Unless there's a hidden resolution changer somewhere, it is locked to a 640x480 res.
Running the game with the '-SOFTWARE3D' eliminates the invisible the 3D models (character, door, etc).

It seems pretty playable, the only thing that is concerning is the UI, text is invisible in shops, inventory items and the whole in game UI in general.

This is my experience from the demo, Unless GOG made some improvements themselves, the full game should behave similarly.
