Gudadantza: Is the gog version of Nethergate different in any way from the Steam release? I own it years ago in Steam but ever had some problems with how the game fits the screen. Nothing terrible or unfixable but I am not very happy about how the game is presented in Steam at least in its actual state.

Any difference? Any advantage or fix to buy it in GOG? Any GOG Connect? :)

Nethergate on Steam does not have cloud saving as far as I know. I learned that the hard way some years back. I am definetily getting this GOG version. Loved the 15-20 hours or so I spent on the Roman side.
Glad to see Nethergate here. Even if I never pop it open, I'll certainly buy it to support someone like Jeff.

I learned about the lack of cloud saves three times :) Being Steam I didnt expected it so it was a pain lose all my saves.

Another thing about this game in Steam, as I commented before, is that it does not appear to remember the screen mode chosen at launch. The minimum resolution for the game is advised as 800x600 but the game renders as integer scaled in my 1366x768 screen, this is, aspect ratio corrected but centered in a small window in the middle not fitting the whole screen as old avernums or other games use to do, at least in GOG. So being 800x600 I do not understand why the only way to make the game fit the screen is running with compatibility mode 640x480 chosen.

Once I started this Avernum game (previous game) I couldn't stop, graphics be damned. And I've seen a bunch of shit, a whole bunch I tell ya. It sucked. You in this world. Until the very end. And the rooms were always already occupied by them damn merchants. Also the first game where I loved the spiders. I can remember most of it. This is what you should give young people with time on their hands. This is what inspires people.

it's 25% cpu ( again) on a quad core 2.66 ghz which should run it easily without seeing cpu usage at all

check 25%_cpu.png which shows the exe is taking the 25% , windowed or full , any resolution , same result
I will try the demo and my other spiderweb games on my new setup ( when i have it assembled :
3.6 ghz (8 core) should do the trick, if not ... well then its the game coding i guess....





73 idle + 25 for the game + 2 = 100 % cpu

Anyway , its on the wishlist now

It might just be me, but I think I prefer the way the skill system worked in the "original" Avernum games to how it works in the remakes.

There's also the fact that the remakes got rid of the ability to replace old party members with new ones, which you could do in the originals.

("original" is in quotes because the "original" Avernum 1-3 are actually remakes of the old Exile games.)

Also, don't forget that demos exist.

When making a remake, Spiderweb rewrites games completely from the bottom up, as if it was a new game, but keeping the plot of the older version. There is improvement in quests, user interface, resolutions supported and steady improvement in graphics. The engine receives improvements as well. You can try the demos to see if it clicks with you, but normally Spiderweb's remakes are the way to go.

That said, sometimes there are aspects from the previous games that someone may miss. Some examples: having a party of 6 in the original Exiles instead of the current party of 4 since the first Avernum, or the plain 2D vs the later isometric view, and those vs the new view in Queen's Wish, etcetera. Since it is difficult to please everyone, Mr. Vogel does his best to make them better games, and trying new things with each game, according to the best of his knowledge and experience.

Yup, i know the game, also familiar with the disks ( floppys) Jef talked about in his interviews, magazines with floppy disc on them, later even cdroms with more and large demos , and before things turned 100% digital only even a dvd demo disk ( like pc gameplay )

There were also full games on 1 or 2 diskettes ( floppydisc) also for AMIGA , full games ( public domain or so( no AAA games ), bought some German magazines because the game looked interesting ...

Anyway, today we have digital only , some older games are available on cd or dvd but they are not that common anymore, also many shops have closed and moved online, no stores or employees , just 1 or 2 people who order the games from some "weird" supplier and the games are shipped to us ... either by mail (overseas) or bus (local)

I knew it was coming but wasn't sure when. Stumbled upon it yesterday. Insta-buy! I played for three hours last night and had to tear myself away to go to work.

Mostly the same old approach, but that's a good thing. UI has been tweaked, both for main screen and inventory. Everything looks great, in my opinion. Story does a good job of making you feel more like your main character (as opposed to past games; just my opinion) and even after only three hours has me pondering what's going on behind the scenes (in the game world, I mean).

Not to spoil anything, but this time you get to take a much more active role in how certain aspects of the game develop. I'll just say that collecting resources is more important than it has been in past games; you'll definitely be needing them.

It's a friggin' blast, and I'll shut up now so I can go play.

I'm not big on technical stuff, but when I first started the game was windowed. I eliminated that by deselecting that option at startup and it starts in full-screen just fine. My monitor res is 1680x1050.
