Chess-like strategy, a puzzle of war.

Massive Assault and Massive Assault: Phantom Renaissance, two games of turn-based tactics and deception from the creators of World of Tanks, available now on Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% launch discount!

Massive Assault is, first and foremost, pure strategy. While it may look like your regular RTS, the Massive Assault series is a game of precise turn-based tactics across hexified battlefields. Your success will not depend on your reaction time or clicks per minute, you will never go into battle uncertain of its outcome. Everything is consistent and laid out on the table from the start - it's your job to make the most of these few rules to deceive and outmaneuver your opponents. The series has been described as a chess-like strategy, a puzzle of war.

Massive Assault: Phantom Renaissance (aka: Domination) is an all-around improvement on the first game and a continuation of the story - it includes an expanded single-player campaign with greater tactical options, more units with better AI, and a much more graphically spectacular war to behold.

Outsmart and deceive your enemies in Massive Assault and Massive Assault: Phantom Renaissance, now on GOG.com! The 50% launch discount for both titles will last for one week, until Tuesday, February 10 at 10:59 AM GMT.

CrowTRobo: How come all the screenshots show multiple units firing at the same time when the game is turn-based? Do you give orders to all your units first then the actual actions take place?

Its also odd none of the screenshots show any kind of interface. Almost like the game has a replay feature and all the pics were taken from the replay.

Never heard of these games. They seem interesting tho.
You can stack multiple orders while the animations play out, so that's probably what you're seeing.

There is an interface, but I do think I saw a save replay option in the menu. I can check next time I boot it up.
remember vaguely buying MA on the cheap years back (yet another game i never played..)

Erich_Zann: Didn't even play Warlords 2 Deluxe then ? You're missing out.
Sorry, I made a mistake.
I did play the Warlords Battlecry series, especially the 3rd entry not the "normal" Warlords.

Oh, so you're definitely missing out on Warlords 2 Deluxe & Warlords 3.
Can anyone confirm that the hot-seat multiplayer option is still part of BOTH games?

They removed it for the Steam-version of Phantom Renaissance, which was a totally shitty thing to do.
Domination is one of the very few games that I bought in the past that was too buggy to run. I couldn't make it past the first or second scenario/mission due to bugs. I wait to see how it works for others before buying.

I bought it after trying the demo of Massive Assault (it looked very interesting and at this price, it's affordable) and unfortunately, I'm having constantly crashs. I sent a support ticket and am waiting for help from GOG (I sent the ticket few hours ago, so it's normal that I still don't have an answer). I can't even finish the 1st training mission for now. Sad because the game looks great. May be should have I bought Massive Assault rather than the sequel.
My case isn't necessarly "universal", but it was just to say : I'm a buyer, and yes, I have troubles with it for now. But I've good hope that GOG will find solutions :)

I would like to offer one piece of advice, if I may :)

When writing a support ticket for any game, please do let us know what steps you've already taken on your own to try and get the game running so that we don't tell you to do something you've already done once :)

I was able to launch a hot-seat game in Phantom Renaissance (it asked me two names, to choose a map, launched the game): it seems to be included. (But as I said previously, I weren't allowed to play even in this mode due to crash : the game launched, I tried to disclose one ally and.. crash).
But I think it is included for Phantom Renaissance to answer your question :)

Are you talking for me, or in general ? (but of course you may ! :))
I tried :D I swear ! (in fact, the very few times I had to submit one ticked, I tryed to explain the best I could, and to sums up what I've done)
I wanted to send you some crashlogs that the game produce, but unfortunately, the ticket system seems to accept only images.

Here, I have now a theory (which may be totally wrong) linked to the game version (and language) : I send it immediatly in complement of my support ticket :) (I don't want to surcharge the thread with this ^^")

I was talking to you but also anyone else in general :) Two birds with one stone and all that :)

JudasIscariot: So what does the note say? :)

Sanjuro: Nothing much, really. "Tried it. Not my cup of tea. Alas." A reply to a person who warned people not to play the game as "it's too addictive".
The picture was originally taken for a forum where I'm known as Ronin.
Thanks for the answer, the curiosity was killing me :)

And you're right :)
Information is the key, 4X and RTS told us this so often !
A TBS, how nice. But then it looks like a lot of emphasis is on graphics. So even despite trustefts review saying it's hardcore I expect rather a shallow tactical game and the typical dumb AI. The last good one I played was Battle of Kronos.

Uh, and the second part seems to be just a campaign on the engine of the first part. And addon, so to speak.

Thanks for clearing that up! Thats actually a nice feature, you can leave the animation on for nice visuals but it doesn't slow down the gameplay.
