Chess-like strategy, a puzzle of war.

Massive Assault and Massive Assault: Phantom Renaissance, two games of turn-based tactics and deception from the creators of World of Tanks, available now on Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% launch discount!

Massive Assault is, first and foremost, pure strategy. While it may look like your regular RTS, the Massive Assault series is a game of precise turn-based tactics across hexified battlefields. Your success will not depend on your reaction time or clicks per minute, you will never go into battle uncertain of its outcome. Everything is consistent and laid out on the table from the start - it's your job to make the most of these few rules to deceive and outmaneuver your opponents. The series has been described as a chess-like strategy, a puzzle of war.

Massive Assault: Phantom Renaissance (aka: Domination) is an all-around improvement on the first game and a continuation of the story - it includes an expanded single-player campaign with greater tactical options, more units with better AI, and a much more graphically spectacular war to behold.

Outsmart and deceive your enemies in Massive Assault and Massive Assault: Phantom Renaissance, now on GOG.com! The 50% launch discount for both titles will last for one week, until Tuesday, February 10 at 10:59 AM GMT.

mrkgnao: Thanks. That was fast!
Because it was something I could directly fix :)
Interesting releases. Can't remember playing them.
Ah, I'll give Phantom Renaissance a try...because it has a single player campaign (the other one was only a tutorial for the
online battles.

MischiefMaker: Phantom Renaissance adds a handful of unique units to the two sides. The FNU gets sneaky tactic units (submarines and mobile platforms), the Phantom League gets huge units that can make two attacks per round (a super battleship and a super mech).

If you're just getting one, get PR.
Interesting. So basically the sequel is more singleplayer-based?

I have found a few like this throughout the catalog. Should I let you know, if I can recall which they were? Seems like one of the first Tomb Raiders was one, but I think I have a few notes at home...

Send me a list via PM if it's not too many. If we're talking double digits then just write a Support ticket with my name on it :)

mistermumbles: You could always give the demo a try to see whether it's to your liking. ;)
I bought the games already, after all 49% discount yay! I like taking risks like these.

It was less than 10, probably less than 5. I'll see what I can dig up...

Vythonaut: I always thought RTS & TBS to be like cRPG & aRPG (if it makes any sense the term). Like in a classic cRPG where the game needs your time and adhesion while an aRPG needs only your time because it's just a clickfest (OK not all ARPGs but you get the point ;-) ), I find it the same to be in TBS & RTS; the one needs a lot of your time and your logic/planning ahead skill (if there is such thing) and the other is better suited to quick "massive assaults" (to use today's release name!) and multitasking.

I like them both, depending on the mood. :-)
Maybe so. What is important to me in RTS games though is that I can freely slow the game down to crawl, so that I have plenty of time to give orders to different units. I don't like the online RTS "who clicks the fastest, wins", that's not why I like RTS.

One thing I dislike in RTS games are time-limits which make no sense (like Rise of Nations: "you have only 90 minutes to conquer all enemy capitals, or else game over for you"... Why? Why don't the enemies have a similar restriction, ie. they lose if they are unable to conquer my capital in 90 minutes?

In TBS games, this same is in the form of limited amount of rounds until the game ends. I think many if not most M.A.X. missions had that, and I really disliked it. I don't dislike special missions with time or round limits, but constantly? What if all Doom levels had a strict 5 minute time limit, or Monkey Island had an overall 10 hour time limit after which you die, unless you were able to beat the game before that?

I'm rambling, so sue me...

M-m-m-hm-m, I remember this one.
It's good that GOG keeps adding older games to their catalogue.

opeter2: The MA series is somehow similar to Warlords series, where every next version was an evolution, so that mean, that they were bit "better" the the older ones, with more options, units, upgrades, tech-tree, better graphics, etc.

Erich_Zann: I take it you didn't play Warlords 4 then ? Lucky you.
No, only 3.

Nothing much, really. "Tried it. Not my cup of tea. Alas." A reply to a person who warned people not to play the game as "it's too addictive".
The picture was originally taken for a forum where I'm known as Ronin.

Didn't even play Warlords 2 Deluxe then ? You're missing out.

And speaking of which, if GOG got Infinite Interactive/Fawkner on board with the RTS spin-offs, what the hell is everybody waiting for to release the proper Warlords games here ? I mean, if memory serves the guy was even musing about doing a Warlords 5 a couple years back, so he must have some control over the IP/trademark/whatever ?

How come all the screenshots show multiple units firing at the same time when the game is turn-based? Do you give orders to all your units first then the actual actions take place?

Its also odd none of the screenshots show any kind of interface. Almost like the game has a replay feature and all the pics were taken from the replay.

Never heard of these games. They seem interesting tho.
