Put your iron hand in a velvet glove.--Napoleon Bonaparte

Imperialism 2: The Age of Exploration, the challenging turn-based strategy where diplomacy and economy matter as much as your military power, is now available on GOG.com, for only $5.99

The world is never at peace, although not all wars are fought with guns and cannons. The nations are in constant struggle. Cutthroat economic rivalry, treacherous backstabbing diplomacy, cynical populism, and indoctrination--all this and more signifies an everlasting conflict waged without even a single gunshot. When power is at stake the governments rarely think about such things at ethics, morals or commonwealth. They would say they do, of course, but the reality is easy to observe. Truth be told, it may seem that a simple straightforward war is a much more dignified option. But tell me, what would YOU do for power?

In Imperialism 2: The Age of Exploration you become one of the world leaders that struggle for power in domination in the colonial times. The turn-based gameplay allows for careful consideration, as you plan out and execute your diplomatic and economic strategy. Then, when it comes to that, it takes you into the battlefield to directly command your units. You can either play through semi-historical scenarios in Europe, or conquer the procedurally-generated New World, so each game is different from the last one.

Find out if the pen is indeed mightier than the sword, as you challenge the world's greatest powers to a game of influence and domination in Imperialism 2: The Age of Exploration, for only $5.99!

RafaelLopez: How does this compare to Colonization?

Trilarion: In Colonization you fight against european bastards, in Imperialism 2 you are them and fight the indians.

It's quite different. Colonization is kind of Civilization with town management and many single units. Imperialism I would compare more with Total War without the real time fights in a way that you manage provinces and armies and overall industry.
I haven't been playing PC lately, but it looks cool.
Looks like an interesting game might look into this at some point in the future once i have gone through some of my backlist.
Holy Mother... I totally missed this release yesterday. O_O
Now this is some great stuff. I only played (and loved) Imperialism 1 so far. With everyone agreeing that Imperialism 2 is even better this has to be an absolutely brilliant release.
Great release! Never played it but I really want to. Historical TBS games are one of my favorite genres and the Imperialism series seem to have a high rank.
Unbelievable. I bought almost every game I was interested in during the Christmas sale – and now just a week later there are not one, not two, but three fantastic games in the list. Cultures 1+2 was already great, Imperialism 2 tops it. :-) I'm curious how this compares with Imperialsm, which I played more than 12 years ago.

Looks like there are still many many good old games out there.
Great release!
Imperialism 1&2 are some of the best strategy games ever. And I am not saying that because I played them once 15 years ago or whatever. No, I just found them 4 years ago and have played them almost 2 years straight. Its incredible how easy they are to learn, but how well everything fits together so they can be hard to master.
For those who tried to make this lovely game windowed and did not succeed:

Search (i took it from sourceforge) and download DxWnd.

DxWnd simply allows you to run DirectX applications, that don’t support a windowed mode through their interface, in windowed mode. DirectX and OpenGL are the two major engines you’re going to run into when playing a PC game, and DirectX is the more common of the two.

After you download and extract the thingy, go into the Edit menu and click Add. Select "Imperialism II.exe" (found where you installed the game).
There’s a lot that you can configure here, but none of it is required. I’d recommend allowing DXWnd to automatically detect the version of DirectX to hook. It does a good job.

From there, you can just double click the path of the application back in the main window, or go to Edit then Execute. If all went well, your color scheme may change a bit or your screen might flicker, as DirectX adjusts, and then your application should launch.

Many thanks to the author.
Shouldn't this go rather to the game specific sub forum in its own thread?

It's a helpful post, so it would be a shame to lose it to the gaping maw that's the General Discussion forum.

Make a thread in the subforum, so anyone having this issue can easily find it. Search is horribly broken here, so there's no way to find this post unless you post its own thread in the relevant forum.

Why, that's my most favorite site! ;D
For a second or two I thought that Imperialism 2 was getting released and got really excited. Then it occurred to me that the game has been available for about 2 years now... then I got kinda sad.
